MPR POLINAUT: “SOURCE: GOP STATE REP. LAURA BROD WILL RUN FOR GOVERNOR”

By Ryan Flynn | June 16, 2009

A source close to GOP state Rep. Laura Brod, of New Prague, said she will run for governor. The source said she’ll make an official announcement in the next week or two. Brod was actively courting activists at Saturday’s MNGOP State Party Central Committee meeting. At the time, she said she was gauging interest on a run.

Brod joins a growing list of candidates who are officially in the race. They include GOP state Rep. Marty Seifert, former MN House Speaker Steve Sviggum, former State Auditor Pat Anderson, state Rep. Paul Kohls and former state Rep. Bill Haas.  Source: MPR Polinaut, June 15, 2009.

The race for Governor is coming more into focus.  This endorsement battle will be exciting.

What makes Laura think she can beat Norm?

  2. Chris Says:
    June 16th, 2009 at 10:23 AM

I’m not particularly excited about this rumor. Laura Brod is a nice person and a good legislator. The problem is she comes off as being a little arrogant. Kinda like: Laura Brod is the smartest person in St. Paul and if you don’t believe it just ask her.

  3. D Says:
    June 16th, 2009 at 11:54 AM

Brod is a prime case of a legislator that is willing to sell Republicans out when its convenient. Call her a Convenience Conservative.

And before her defenders start up, remember: she ranks #19 in the House for a score by the Taxpayers League.

Republicans in Hennepin County (with 1/4 of the state’s population) will not forget how she proudly sold us down the river for Smilin’ Carl!

  4. Chris Says:
    June 16th, 2009 at 12:01 PM

    D,

Tom Hackbarth and Julianne Ortman are the number one friends of the Taxpayer’s League last year. Sen. Ortman will likely lose that slot this year because of her bill to tax the crap out of the credit card companies. Neither of these people have a prayer of being elected governor.

  5. Average Joe Says:
    June 16th, 2009 at 12:35 PM

What makes Laura think she can beat Norm?

    She’s better looking.

  6. D Says:
    June 16th, 2009 at 12:42 PM

    Chris:

I tend to agree…the race will likely be between Kohls, Seifert, and Sviggum. I just pray the state delegates don’t swallow Brod’s convenience-conservative tripe.

  7. danbrome Says:
    June 16th, 2009 at 12:43 PM

Isn’t Senator Geoff Michel even in the mix?

    DARN!

  8. D Says:
    June 16th, 2009 at 12:55 PM

    Anybody…ANYBODY…but Brod.

  9. Jason Says:
    June 16th, 2009 at 12:58 PM

Looks like some people are scared of the prospect of Laura Brod running because she will make such a strong candidate.

Anybody but Brod? That includes Seifert then? The guy that talks like a slow robot with the bad combover.

  10. Chris Says:
    June 16th, 2009 at 1:00 PM

    D,

Steve Sviggum is far more of a so-called conveneince-conservative than Laura Brod. Recall when Jesse was Governor how Steve got rolled time and time again. I don’t think Sviggum would have the same kind of intestinal fortitude that Pawlenty has when it comes to tax policy and spending.

  11. D Says:
    June 16th, 2009 at 1:45 PM

Wave a microphone around and wait 5 seconds. Brod shows up. Panting.

  12. PD Says:
    June 16th, 2009 at 2:51 PM

Let’s see–Republicans get killed by women and young voters the past three elections–the solution of many–let’s find another old white man (Seifert may not be old but he looks older than Sviggum) to run. An articulate conservative like Brod can appeal to those voters and actually win statewide.

  13. D Says:
    June 16th, 2009 at 3:16 PM

Brod’s as conservative as a house cat. Open your eyes.

  14. annaheim Says:
    June 16th, 2009 at 3:32 PM

Maybe Dorothy Fleming will announce and make all you unrealistic moonbats happy.

  15. JC Says:
    June 16th, 2009 at 5:43 PM

Laura Brod is a hard shell, conservative back bencher with no visible constituency outside of New Prague. The one issue that she showed real leadership on – the Twins stadium – also makes a lot of folks like “D” very upset. Otherwise, her legislative record is quite undistinguished.

Steve Sviggum is the one Republican in the race who can force the DFL to play defense. He has the moxie, the record, and the skills to define himself as a “safe” Republican. Running a hard shell conservative will invariably lead to another defeat.

While there are safe conservative districts, a statewide race means that the successful Republican will have to rely on his/her conservative base but will also have to attract moderates and independents – most of whom no longer trust “conservative” as a political label.

  16. Mr. Leroy Jenkins Says:
    June 16th, 2009 at 7:01 PM

Laura Brod is the Sarah Palin of this race.

Her lack of experience is a majar factor, but since she is a woman, no one on the right dares address it, lest the party’s tent continue to shrink.

Like many of the lefties on here, I am excited to see her enter the ring.

  17. J.L. Says:
    June 16th, 2009 at 7:28 PM

Right Leroy, just like you guys didn`t have the balls to address Obama`s lack of experience.

  18. W.James Says:
    June 16th, 2009 at 8:33 PM

Maybe some of you guys should look at Sviggum’s record before you continue the pile on toward Brod.

D, Sviggum was the Speaker of the House during the Stadium debate and yet you don’t count him out as a viable candidate? Maybe some of your vitriol should be focused his direction. He is the guy who brought the Twins bill up for a vote, raised money for the caucus from the Twins supporters and the guy who pushed the cigarette tax.

Btw Leroy, Brod has as much experience as Kohls and Seifert. Yet, none of you jokers are suggesting they should not run.

  19. Right is RIGHT Says:
    June 16th, 2009 at 8:58 PM

Laura Brod attracts the base, and can attract moderates and independents. Based on her positions on the issues, she can win a statewide race. I don’t think the Twins stadium people will bring her down. She might not be the one to run but I would put her right there with Sviggim, Seifert and Kohls.

I know the stadium people are still pissed, but they are going to have to get over it. Many of them already have gotten over it and by the time this race is going on, there will be nothing but rave reviews regarding Target Field. I wish St. Paul built it. In other words, lots of other issues will be on the table, the Twins stadium debate is ancient history. And in the grand scheme, not that important moving forward.

So D and others like him/her will all be in a tizzy but I can’t help but wonder if it’s more personal when s/he puts out “And before her defenders start up, remember: she ranks #19 in the House for a score by the Taxpayers League.” Umm, looking at that scorecard, they didn’t tally her vote to sustain the Transporation override because she was excused (she voted against it in the first place) and she also voted for the HHS omnibus bill that only 7 people in the entire House voted against. Did you bother to check out what was being scored D?

And beyond that, who do you like for the GOP nod? Obviously it will have to be somebody who voted against the Twins Stadium… Who is the front runner amongst that group?

  20. Rusty Says:
    June 17th, 2009 at 6:32 AM

republicans will never elect a woman. Look what they did saturday – no women left on the exec board

  21. chile Says:
    June 17th, 2009 at 8:22 AM

Rusty, to date, how many women has the DFL endorsed for Governor?

Nationwide, there currently are more female Republican Governors than female Democratic Governors.

  22. Chris Says:
    June 17th, 2009 at 10:03 AM

    Rusty,

Democrats will never elect a woman preisdent. Look at what they did to Hillary Clinton.

  23. Rusty Says:
    June 17th, 2009 at 10:04 AM

But not in Minnesota. One of the DFL front runners for Governor is the House Majority Leader, I do believe she is a women

  24. gopstreetfighter Says:
    June 17th, 2009 at 10:06 AM

    Hey Rusty,

The House Majority Leader is Tony Sertich, he might be surprised to find out that he is a woman AND that he is a front runner for Governor.

  25. Keep it Simple Says:
    June 17th, 2009 at 10:09 AM

    Rusty,

I understand your lack of certainty, but I believe she is a woman too …. at least I’m pretty sure.

  26. chile Says:
    June 17th, 2009 at 10:43 AM

Rusty, it’s Tony Sertich, not Toni.

As far as Speaker Margaret Anderson-Kelliher goes: She is at least two “women”.

  27. Norman Says:
    June 17th, 2009 at 10:49 AM

It’s hard to support anyone who used the violent coercive power of the state to extract money from us plebes and give it to Carl Pohlad. Nothing could be more offensive.

    Savior/Brod 2010!!!

  30. Paul Lubbers Says:
    June 17th, 2009 at 8:11 PM

The stadium might be ancient history to some people, but, to those of us who will continue to pay for the damn thing for the REST OF OUR LIVES it is still a quite current point of contention. And no, we don’t have to get over it and we won’t.

  31. Right is RIGHT Says:
    June 17th, 2009 at 9:59 PM

No, you don’t have to get over the Twins stadium, that’s fine. But I would rather have a Republican win the race for Gov to prevent what would surely be a nightmare DFL Gov with 2-1s in each house than hold a grudge over a stadium vote that is ancient history.

Besides, with the revenue you raise from having a professional sports team in town with a new park (more people spending money in Henn), think of all the green roofs and water fountains you can build in Hennepin County… I’m from Ramsey Co., I’d take the sales tax if I could have the Twins and the stadium. At least you get some return on the taxes.

  32. AC Says:
    June 18th, 2009 at 9:04 AM

    Right to Right,

If stadiums are so great rom a financial standpoint, what’s the problem with the new Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis? Do some research and you will see what a financial mess that is becoming, and it hasn’t even been open a year!

  33. Chris Says:
    June 18th, 2009 at 10:25 AM

    AC,

That’s true. But the same is also true about public transit and light rail projects which never break even. Even the Como Park shuttle which is paid for by pennies from heaven (actually the federal government via China) will cost the city $150,000 in operating costs every year. Even large cities like Washington, D.C. with significant light rail ridership have an annual operating deficit of $150 million or more.

  34. College Dem Says:
    June 18th, 2009 at 9:43 PM

My observation is that Brod tries to take political advantage of situations. She is calling on people to not take the $50 refund program for the last few weeks of June. Hasn’t she been using it for the last 7 years!!!??? Is this just another way of saying “my gubernatorial campaign isn’t organized, has no treasurer or bank account or way to raise money quickly, so I’ll try to make political hay quickly and get others to try to not take it?”

Sviggum has a lot of issues going back to his Speakership and seems to be yesterday’s news. Many of my friends think that he is a nice man, but probably a good candidate for 1990, not 2010.

    Who is Paul Kohls?

I’ve dealt with Marty Seifert before. The Democrats constantly under-estimate him. They always thought they had a chance against him in his races and got creamed by 20+ points while other DFLers did pretty decent at the same time. I predict he will out-work everyone, out-organize and out-fundraise. The media and talking head friends will laugh at him until he ends up being the GOP candidate, with an even shot at winning. He wins rural and moderate DFLers. This has frustrated me to no end, but somehow this guy clicks with blue collar people and I don’t get it!

Geoff Michel might run in a primary. Unless Ramstad gets in, no one will have a chance against the endorsed candidate, right now, probably Seifert.

Pat Anderson would be a dream candidate for DFLers. We already beat her once, by a huge margin (I think 100,000 more votes than Kiffmeyer). My Republican friends say that she will pander to the Ron Paul people because she has no voting record like Brod, Sviggum, Kohls, Seifert, Michel, Hann and others.

Dave Hann seems nice, but ultra-conservative.

A view from a young, rural DFLer.

  35. Paul Lubbers Says:
    June 19th, 2009 at 1:52 AM

I would rather have a republican governor who remembers he is republican, not DFL lite. As for benefitting from the extra tax revenue; I don’t benefit from it at all. I believe county government should starved. When they are short of money they seem to pay more attention as to how it is spent.

I too wish Ramsey county could take the stadium and the tax. Ramsey taxpayers seem to enjoy throwing away their money on toys for millionaires.

I hearken back to the days when the “Great Minds” were trying to sell us ignorant vassles on the idea of the HHH trash bag: Businesses will pop up around it like weeds in a vacant lot! Jobs will grow like hair on a dog! we’ll all get rich! Rich I tell you!

Well here we are these many years later. No businesses, A few part time jobs. The team owners are getting rich. No one else.

If we in the county had had the opportunity to vote on the issue, as state law demands, and it had been voted in… well, fine. The people have voted and this is the decision. I might not like it, but, I at least I would have had a vote. As state law requires.

BUT NO! Our esteemed politicians knew we couldn’t be trusted with something as important as children’s games. (We might lose da Twins!)

I for one have a long memory. And an increasingly empty wallet.

If I can’t get a republican who knows the difference between things the government is supposed to do and that which it is not, I won’t settle for the lesser of two idiots.

  36. MikeWBL Says:
    June 19th, 2009 at 7:05 PM

Laura is a very smart businesswoman with excellent knowlege and experience in business, taxes and health care. She will be an excellent candidate for the Republican party.

In the end, the Republican endorsement may come down to Laura and Marty.

  37. Authentically Right Says:
    June 22nd, 2009 at 12:02 PM

I fear MikeWBL may be right. If it turns out to be the actual case that Brod wins the nomination, Democrats win.

  38. Jane Says:
    June 23rd, 2009 at 8:41 AM

If it is anything like 2008 (and some are saying it could be worse) Brod stands the best chance to win. Clearly she is the one the Dems want out of the race.

  39. Octavian Says:
    June 26th, 2009 at 11:02 AM

The mildly attractive woman vote will be in full force.
