FRANKEN DEEPLY UNPOPULAR NATIONALLY

By Ryan Flynn | July 2, 2009

Senator-elect Al Franken won’t start his life in the nation’s most deliberative body with the love of the nation, according to a new poll.

The Rasmussen poll of voters across the United States found that 44 percent of those surveyed had an unfavorable view of Minnesota’s newest Senator and 34 percent had a favorable view of him. Twenty-two percent said they didn’t have a view of him.” Source: Pioneer Press, July 2, 2009.

Why in the world should we care what people outside of Minnesota think about our choice of elected officers? What could possibly be of less relevance or less significance?

Hiram – I don’t know about you, but I prefer not to be ridiculed when venturing outside of the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Seriously, this is more embarrasing and sad than Jesse Ventura.

These numbers everyone represent the honeymoon period. The clock is ticking….. when will big Al throw a tantrum? Remember his trade is in large part attracting attention (using prankish childlike degrading hedonistic humor) and shocking people, making them laugh. Like Ventura this attribute won’t go away. He has no experience at all that has anything to do with a Senate career. The man will lose and lose bad each week, month, and year. The Dems will find an easy out at some point in order to replace him. If not this the Democrats will endure a enough hits to their brand to induce concussion. The end is the begginning of a long drawn out down fall. We though this election took a long time to end its course? No Al’s down fall will make th eelection look as if it only took one month to resolve. Maybe three or four years.

    Hiram..

Senator-Elect Franken received the most votes, votes cast by Minnesota citzens. Although the race was very close, our system enables the people to elect the candidates of their choice.

I’m thankful to live in a country where we can vote and elect our representatives.

I am proud to live in this great state, and place little importance on what citizens from other states might think of our decisions.

Remember, New Yorkers think that anybody who lives west of the Hudson must be a farmer anyway.

  5. chile Says:
    July 2nd, 2009 at 3:57 PM

    Hiram, Franken cares.

He’s not even in the Senate yet, and already 44 percent of the country dissapprove of him. It goes to show that people haven’t for about his taxcheating, porn writing, and hate-speech.

  6. Jeff Fecke Says:
    July 2nd, 2009 at 4:26 PM

You know, there was a time when Minnesotans wouldn’t care what folks from the rest of the country thought. We’d do what we thought was right, and that would be it.

Good to know Mini-Mike and Mini-Mini-Mike value the opinion of others more than they value the opinion of Minnesotans.

I am sort of a combative person with a low opinion generally, of the technique of ridicule as used in politics. Let’s just say that when I am outside of Minnesota and anyone tried to ridicule me about either Ventura, or Franken, the response would be withering.

  8. DJZ Says:

Well, I guess he won’t be running for President soon.
The more important poll is the one officiated from election day. Minnesotans approved of him and he will represent us well.

Al is doing great seeing that he’s entering a congress with a 54% disapproval rating (most of that is due to unpopularity of the Republicans).

Franken will help BOOST confidence in Congress with those numbers.

    Thanks for the info.

  9. Hiram Says:
    July 2nd, 2009 at 4:32 PM

“He’s not even in the Senate yet, and already 44 percent of the country disapprove of him.”

Well, I disapprove of 44 percent of the country. I am sure that keeps them awake at night.

The choice of electing Minnesota officials belongs to Minnesotans. The Glenn Becks, the Keith Olbermann’s, the John Cornyn’s, the Harry Reids of the world should have the common decency to get their noses out of our affairs. It’s our job to decide these issues, and it’s their job to stand back and look upon Minnesota with awe and wonder.

“I don’t recall you harping when Angry Al was cashing those big campaign checks from New York and Hollywood.”

But I didn’t complain about Norm’s out of state money either. But I have harped quite a bit about out of state politicians involving themselves in Minnesota politics, and I think I have done so on a nonpartisan basis. I thought both Reid and Cornyn should have stayed out of it. I was very offended by Reid’s statements critical of our Governor after Tuesday’s decision. I will also say that I have at all times been impressed with Gov. Pawlenty’s handling of senate recount issues. It seems to me that at all times he has struck exactly the right balance between his two roles, as leader of Minnesota Republicans, and as a constitutional officer.

“The opinions of people from across the United States is 100% relevant.”

Al like Norm was elected to the senate by Minnesotans. Al, like Norm, should work on behalf of Minnesotans in ways that are consistent with our national interests.

    DJZ,

You think you’re really cute, don’t you? Congress’ approval rating is low because of Republicans??? Last time I saw, Nancy Pelosi had lower poll ratings than Dick Cheney and Harry Reid is on a list of vulnerable Democrats. And a recent Gallup poll showed that the highest percentage of Americans think the Democrat party is too liberal since before the 1994 elections. Nice try though.

  25. Chris Says:

    P.S. DJZ,

If the Obama Administration is so popular, why is it that Joe Biden can’t even draw a crowd of more than 100 people in Erie, PA? Hell, when Cheney came to the Minneapolis Convention Center in 2004, there were around 1500 people in attendance.

    From the Pittsburgh Tribune:

Biden fails to draw crowd in Erie
    Posted July 1, 2009 11 :29 AM

Wattsburg, Pa. — Vice President Joe Biden visited a small town on the outskirts of Erie today to talk to rural folks about federal stimulus money that can be used to expand broadband access to the Internet for rural areas that typically have poor connections.

Apparently stimulus money and broadband are not all that interesting to the local folk here: Only around 100 or so people have showed up so far to hear Biden talk at noon at Seneca High School off Route 8 in Wattsburg.

The room looked so sparse that about 30 or so chairs were removed by volunteers to give the illusion of a full house.

    The effect didn’t exactly work.

Pittsburgh native and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper are also on hand to talk about access to high speed internet as an essential tool for success in business and in school in our struggling economy.

  26. Dash Riprock Says:
    July 3rd, 2009 at 1:29 AM

I was asked by a number of business associates in CA this week how stupid are Minnesotans that they could elect Franken? We are really the laughingstocks of the nation right now, and just as I don’t consider Obama to be “my” president, I don’t consider Franken to be “my” senator.

Obama is failing miserably and Franken will also. Unemployment went up to 9.5% this week after the current administration said it wouldn’t go over 8% and a lot of economists believe it will hit double digit later this year. How anyone can have confidence in this White House or Democrat controlled House and Senate proves that liberals are nothing but a bunch of lemmings who will believe anything these clowns tell them. Many of these people were extremely vocal about W’s deficit, but say nothing about Obama’s quadrupling of it.

James Carville recently cautioned Democrats that they are making the same mistakes that were made in 1994 that led to major gains for Republicans in the House and Senate. Can’t wait for 2010 and 2012 when people will once again realize liberalism continues to fail everytime it’s tried.

  27. Hiram Says:
    July 3rd, 2009 at 5:59 AM

“I was asked by a number of business associates in CA this week how stupid are Minnesotans that they could elect Franken?”

From Californians? A state that has elected one celebrity politician after another? The state that is currently paying it’s debts with IOU’s?

  28. Hiram Says:
    July 3rd, 2009 at 6:13 AM

In any event, I think the problems of Minnesota are very similar to those of California for what amounts to the same reason, a loss of real control over revenues. And I notice the remedies are similar in effect. California, like Minnesota is trying to unallot. California is using IOU’s, which are effectively budget shifts, the policy about which our own governor is so enthusiastic. That’s the direction our governor is leading us, and I believe we should all think long and hard as to whether that’s where we want to go.

    Dash RipyourPants,
Republican leadership has ruined California, as it has the national economy.

    Chris,
You said:“If the Obama Administration is so popular, why is it that Joe Biden can’t even draw a crowd of more than 100 people in Erie, PA?”

    Typical Republican misinformation.

    1. You mention Obama and then use Biden an an example of popularity.
    2. Wattsburg has a population of 378. 100 people showing up is pretty good.
    3. When Obama was in Minnesota, he filled Excell Center, Target Center and the FUNDRAISER at the Convention Center. You really want to talk about the crowds he can draw?

I.Obama is the most popular living person on Earth.
II. The Republican leadership is less popular than the Democrats.
III. Frankens disapproval numbers are not as high as Congress is overall- he will help bring their numbers up.

  31. Chris Says:
    July 3rd, 2009 at 10:33 AM

    DJZ,

Obama is the most popular living person on Earth? I know he has a Messiah complex, but I didn’t know his supporters were buying into it as well. I bet if you poll tested Obama against the Pope, you’d be in for a surprise.

If you don’t think that Democrat supporters were bused in from around the area to see Joe Biden, you’re nuts. And it’s pretty sad to see how Obama’s supporters are already throwing their Vice President under the bus barely over 100 days into the administration. As for your assertion about the unpopularity of the Republican leadership, I’d just note the current Rasmussen Reports Generic Ballot poll which shows Republicans at 41% and Democrats at 39%.

The takeover of the car companies, the two trillion (and growing) deficit, the failed and wasteful stimulus, and siding with Cuba and Venezuela over the Honduran people and Constitution will all (among others) be issues for the next election.

  32. DJZ Says:
    July 3rd, 2009 at 10:40 AM

You try running on helping out the people of Honduras, as we are in Iraq. Over a trillion dollars there. Try selling that to an American population that’s sucking up the recession your party left us.

We may get to 75 Senators.

  33. chile Says:
    July 3rd, 2009 at 12:07 PM

DJZ, Democrats have had control of both house of congress since January 2007. The recession began in 2008. Do try to keep up. You continue to make an ass of yourself when you get the facts wrong.

  34. DJZ Says:
    July 3rd, 2009 at 12:09 PM

    Facts wrong and elections right.

  35. Focused on 2010 Says:
    July 3rd, 2009 at 12:18 PM

When did the current recession start DJZ? (December 2007) Who controlled Congress when it started? (Democrats) What did the party in charge of Congress do to head off the recession? (Nothing)

You may dream about “75 Senators” but you are more likely to lose 7 or more Senators and a much larger percentage in the House.

    Remember 1994? Damn good year!

  36. Chris Says:
    July 3rd, 2009 at 12:48 PM

    DJZ,

What about the trillion that was spent in stimulus and hasn’t created a single job? You want to talk about that wasted money?

As for the people in Honduras, I’d surely rather be on their side than on the side of another dictator. The polls are swinging back to the Republicans in terms of trust on National Security issues. Your party sat there and lectured Republicans and President Bush on alienating our allies. Now Barack Obama is kissing the ass of every tin horn dictator and is screwing our best allies like Great Britian and now even Germany.

California is run by Democrats and a governor who acts like one. Arnold is nothing but a RINO and has implemented failed Democrat policies of the past exactly as Obama is doing. They recently passed a $1 billion tax increase and their deficit increased even more. Sounds like what your boy is trying to do in D.C.

Also, your revisionist history is quite laughable about when the recession started and who controlled congress when things went south. You truly are one of the koolaid drinkers aren’t you.

  41. Hiram Says:

The democrats will stop at nothing – nothing- to win. It doesn’t bother them in the least to fling mud, lie, steal, or cheat. They do not care who they destroy or what the polls say about them. They care about one thing: winning. They are good at it.

I constantly hear Republican politicians saying they don’t want to “stoop to that level”.

Well say this a few times: Senator Al Franken.

    Get it?

Now ask yourselves: Do you want to win? How bad do you want to win? Do you want to win bad enough to do what it takes? Are you ready to get into the dirt now? No?

Say it again: Senator Al Franken.

The Republican party is void of leadership right now. Honestly, when Palin steps on the stage- you wing nuts go crazy, you love her. She is no dummy. She can now go and raise money (Republicans are generally having a hard time do it), get some intellectual credibility and hit the media circuit until she is the defacto leader of the Republicans. She is, I repeat, is running for President. Pawlenty- look out! Triple A got his candidate.

You establishment will be going nuts. They like to use her to raise money but, are hesitant to follow her or let her take the lead on any issue that’s not about women. But, to the base, she is a rock star.

Before we have to be concerned about Palin (which is never) she will effectively tear that party up from the inside. Just like she did ol McCain’s campaign.

I bet he’s wishing he would have picked Pawlenty, Romney or Rotten Rudy.

Why is it necessary to always try to compare Obama to Palin. He won, she was second billing on the losing team.

Now get back to why she couldn’t stand the heat and left after serving technically ONE year and six months before she started running for the DC job.

    brone,

I know all you care about are polls and what far-left websites spoon feed to you. But I’d be pretty damned concerned if my party was about to lose the Governorship of New Jersey and possibly Virginia in the 2009 elections.

Remember that Republicans beat Tom Daschle because he was a liberal, bitter partisan in an otherwise red state and we’ll do the same to Harry Reid who is even more liberal and bitter than Daschle. With all of the military in Nevada, I don’t think Reid’s pronouncement that the Iraq war was lost before the surge even began was particularly popular.

  71. Hiram Says:
    July 5th, 2009 at 6:21 AM

I am always concerned. And there will be some high profile losses coming up. Obviously Corzine should step down as a candidate. I am not as pessimistic as some about Virginia, but that’s always a tough place for Democrat to win. Reid’s candidacy in Nevada is generally considered hopeless. But that’s the way things are in politics. You win some, and you lose some.

  72. DJZ Says:
    July 5th, 2009 at 10:40 AM

These guys are like the Fox News hosts on election. Drawing in the furthest scenarios to explain how the Republicans win.

How in the hell are you going to win in Nevada or New Jersey while raising up the hate meter on Hispanics? You’ve played yourselves out with any state with a sizable Hispanic voting population. You’d been smart to go along with getting Sotomayor confirmed by the end of this month. Dragging this out just allows your leaders to insult hispanics and their organizations longer and closer to the election season.

You’re still loosing with educated people and young people. Look at the population centers in Virginia- again.

You’ve done nothing to push a message of your own. You’re now peddling Hope, hope that enough Americans are turned off by the Democrats action. Well, great. Except politicians are rewarded for trying instead of crying. Republicans have done nothing but cried since they lost the elections.

Besides, won’t you be too busy trying to defeat the eight republicans who voted for the Climate Bill? I think 3 were from New Jersey.

You still just don’t get it.

  73. Chris Says:
    July 5th, 2009 at 12:34 PM

    DJZ,

Funny that Hispanics didn’t turn against the Democrat Party when you smeared Al Gonzalez and blocked the nomination of Miguel Estrada. And blacks didn’t turn against the Democrat Party when you smeared Justice Thomas and blocked the nomination of Janice Rogers Brown.

Jimmy Carter tried like hell to turn the economy around and free the hostages. Voters realized that his policies were to BLAME for the economy and the hostages and they voted him out. Funny how history repeats itself because Barack Obama is pursuing the exact same Carteresque policies that led to the failed economy of the 1970s and American decline around the globe.

You still just don’t get it.

  74. DJZ Says:
    July 5th, 2009 at 1:05 PM

    Chris,
That’s true about the other groups not abandoning the Democratic party over those examples.

Again, you thinking that they represent some kind of relevance is yet another example of the Republicans not getting it.

How small do you have to shrink your party before you start to realize you’re out of touch?

Jimmy Carter is so long ago that its like arguing the Depression for most voters. Millions were not even born and millions more weren’t old enough to vote for him- including the current President.

You’re mired in the past because the present is confusing and the future scares you.

Step One: Admit your policies are rejected over your personalities.

  76. Darren Says:
    July 5th, 2009 at 2:51 PM

Harry Reid will win because the republicans will not find a viable candidate to run against him. The republican governor and republican congressman has said no, the republican mayor of Reno endorsed Reid (not sure why). Also, Reid has an insane amount of cash that he has been raising since before 2008, which he can use to blanket the main media market in Nevada. So Reid is heavily favored despite his approval ratings.

Dodd, on the other hand, has a legitimate opponent, former congressman Rob Simmons, who is a very moderate and popular republican known well throughout the state. Dodd cannot buy his way out of that race, and faces an uphill battle for re-election.

As for the person who said that democrats will lose 7 seats, I’m not exactly sure what sort of news your reading; what other democrats are at risk of losing besides Dodd and Reid? Democrats have a good chance of winning four seats where the republican is retiring (NH, MO, OH, FL); in addition GOP senator David Vitter of Lousiana is running for re-election despite being caught in a prostitute scandal, and senator Jim Bunning of Kentucky has worse approval ratings than Dodd and Reid and has attracted the democrat LT. Gov and Attorney General to challenge him.

My main point is that the democrats, unlike the republicans, embrace the moderate wing of their party. Reading the conservative blogs, you wouldn’t have any idea that 44 (yes 44) democrats voted against Pelosi on cap and trade, only that 8 traitor republicans voted for it. Democrats will find conservative candidates that can win in states that John Mccain won; if the republicans try to to the same in liberal states, the challengers will be branded as RINOs and will not get the votes of many conservatives. Until the republicans decide that winning is more important than ideological purity, they will always remain in the minority.

No Darren, your point was that conservative blogs totally ingorned the 44 Democrat who disagreed with this horrible legislation. You heard that somewhere and decided to repeat the lie without checking you facts.

Why did blue-to-yellow dog Democrats like Collin Peterson and Tim Walz support it? Because they were threatened by Pelosi and Waxman. (In Walz’s case – think back to Pelosi’s recent visit to raise funds for him: Quid pro quo!)

We can all expect that the 44 democrats who voted no will now be given be considered “Traitor Joes” within the Democratic Party.

    brone,

For the record, I’m saying that the Democrat party’s current margin of 60 Senators is going to be a high water mark. Whether the Democrats lose two or three or seven will depend on how long unemployment stays above double digits. In terms of unemployment, this is already the worst recession since after WWII.

  90. danbrome Says:

With all due respect, for Democrats to “LOSE” 7 or more, by definition they would have to lose a NET seven seats.

Otherwise, they would not be considered to have lost 7.

For example, if the Dems win 5 races, and lose 5 races, they will have lost zero.

  91. chile Says:
    July 5th, 2009 at 11:30 PM

Liberal danbrome, go back and read the thread, you idiot.

DJZ said “We may get to 75 Senators.”

2010 responded: “You may dream about “75 Senators” but you are more likely to lose 7 or more Senators and a much larger percentage in the House.”

You yourself agreed with Chris that 60 Democratic senators is a “high water mark.”

Why is it you pin down 2010, but ignore DJZ – whose prediction is more “absurd”?

  92. chile Says:
    July 5th, 2009 at 11:38 PM

Liberal danbrome, when I hear of a “loss” of 7 seats” – I do think net loss. However, this is not by “definition.”

Let’s say I’m at the state fair and lose a twenty dollar bill. I’ve lost $20. An hour later I find a five dollar bill. I’ve found $5, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t also loose $20.

  93. Chris Says:
    July 6th, 2009 at 1:11 AM
