WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT UNALOTTMENT OUTRAGE?

By Ryan Flynn | July 20, 2009

You might remember how loud the chorus cries were from DFL leaders and  elected officials around the time that Governor Pawlenty announced his unallotment plan.

Since that original announcement however DFL’ers have been remarkably silent.  Many Capitol insiders I have talked with merely speculated that DFL leaders were screaming foul to cater to their base.  Democrats I am talking with are still very angry over how badly the DFL led legislature was outmaneuvered by the Governor.

It seems that the DFL and DFL leaders have realized that there is nothing they can do about the unallotments.  Worse yet, they have realized they simply are the ones to blame for their own embarrassment.  Had they worked with the Governor on a budget instead of ramming through ridiculous tax increase after tax increase they know they would not have faced the unallotments.

You also might remember how loud the tag team duo of tax and spend liberal Mayors Chris Coleman and R.T. Rybak were screaming about the cuts they would have to make in their cities.

Yes the two Mayors who complain about LGA and then turn around and spend money to promote tap water and a free shuttle bus to Como Zoo among other things.  It seems it is Coleman’s turn to promote wasted money in his city.

This week the Star Tribune reported that St. Paul looks likely to spend money to make sure that art is included in public works projects.  Yes, one of the two mayors who has threatened to cut cops and firefighters wants to be able to make sure that art is included in public works projects.

The quote from an aide to Coleman is priceless:  “Joe Spencer, Mayor Chris Coleman’s aide for arts and culture, said the mayor supports the ordinance changes. “They just allow us to spend dollars more wisely,” Spencer said.”  Source: Star Tribune, July 13, 2009.

With growing fatigue from the American people about the amount of money being spent in Washington and the lack of results don’t expect Minnesotans to be overly enthusiastic to continue down that path.  With the tax and spend records of the DFL candidates for Governor they may just extend that dry spell without the Governor’s office at least another four years.

To be honest, I never thought the cries of outrage from the DFL legislative leadership were particularly loud. Sound strategies exist for opposing the governor’s unallotment policy, but they haven’t been pursued. I think its interesting to ask why that is.

    Hiram, are you hearing impaired.

And you might want to off the mute button on your TV. Taryl Clark (monkey woman), Big MAK, Pogie, RT, and Chris Coleman were screaming the loudest weeks before the unallotments were announced.

The problem with their cries is that taxpayers have grown tired of it. Perhaps if you didn’t hear their screams it’s because the DFL message of big government no longer resonates.

Yes, I dimly recall reading about that on this website. No doubt the crowds were packed all along the way.

Seriously, I don’t think it was reasonably possible for the DFL leadership to do less than they did at the end of the session, and they haven’t been heard from since.

There are effective strategies which can be used in response to the governor’s actions. I don’t say that they are necessarily winning strategies, and I don’t necessarily know what winning means in this context. But clearly the DFL could do substantially more if that’s what they decided to do.

I received a self-congratulatory e-mail from Chris Coleman a couple of weeks ago.

he was crowing about having “found” $400k to pay overtime for cops this summer. Where did he find such a huge stack of cash?

It was money the PD saved the year before…get this….on overtime.

You just can’t make it up fast enough.

Should the federal government stop spending money on the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore?

The monies cut from the State Budget via unallottment will do little to offset a proposed State Budget shortfall of more than double by the time Pawlenty leaves office for the next Governor to face. That comming from Tom Stinson.
