OPEN LETTER TO JOE BODELL REGARDING ISSUES AT DFL HQ
By Aaron Cocking | August 24, 2009
Per Joe Bodell’s request I sent him a letter with the questions I had posed on Minnesota Democrats Exposed on August 18th regarding problems at DFL HQ. Below is the full letter.
Joe,
Â
Read your tweet. I do have a few questions for you, and the readers of Minnesota Democrats Exposed would appreciate a prompt response.
Â
1.) What were you/are you hearing about the problems the DFL was/is having with the FEC?
2.) What specific information did you have access to when you posted that the DFL was having trouble with the FEC, and why did you suddenly change your position?
3.) Did someone inside the DFL, either a staffer or leadership officer, ask you to change your public position on the reported problems with the DFL and the FEC?
Â
Thanks again Joe, we look forward to hearing your answers.
Â
Regards,
Â
Aaron Cocking
Please check back to Minnesota Democrats Exposed later tonight to read his response.

I have a general problem with this whole series on MDE. It’s one thing to report a story based on facts. But you simply can’t report that a story is true because somebody else reported it to be true. Relying on some blogger’s Twitter account is absolutely horrendous journalism and it’s horrendous blogging. The fact that MDE relies on liberal bloggers for information suggests that they no longer have any real world connections.
One time, a poster insisted that an MDE story was true, and to prove it, provided a link to a blog which reported that MDE reported it. High school kids create websites and use them as sources of information for school projects. I expect a little bit more from adults.

“Relying on some blogger’s Twitter account is absolutely horrendous journalism and it’s horrendous blogging.”
Does that include the mainstream media that followed Sarah Palins twitter.
Bodell made statements on his blog and via twitter that has yet to back up. MDE is asking him to clear the air.
Bodell himself was on the radio, where he spent and hour discussing unfounded claims that that conservative blogger Andy Aplikowski made in a post.
Bodell is the one who first posted on the DFL’s potential problems with the FEC: MDE posted asking questions about what Bodell meant by this … Bodell responds that if they have questions they should ask him … MDE sends Bodell a letter asking him those questions … Bodell has yet to respond.

Chile, when was the last time you tuned into the mainstream media and thought “that was great journalism!” Remember? Neither can I.
I completely understand the points you (and MDE) are making regarding Bodell’s initial claims vs. what he’s saying now. But making this the top story for weeks on end makes one thing clear: MDE is more concerned with this insignificant conspiracy theory about a blogger than the DFL/FEC story. Which is more telling than any observation I could make. I’m guessing Bodell won’t respond, and I get every subtle indication from MDE that they’re banking on that outcome.

Mondo, this has not been the top story for weeks. I was first posted when Bodell made his claim three weeks ago as well as follow-ups to MinnPost and Startribune coverage of Bodell’s accusation.
Bodell then went into hiding for several days. When he came out, he made a post blaming MinnPost’s Doug Grow (his fellow liberal) for reporting on a subject that he was the first to publicize.
Let’s take a look at the denial of FEC problems by the DFL, that both Grow and MDE have updated in their posts:
“I can categorically say there are no pending FEC enforcement actions with the Minnesota Democratic Party,’’ Reiff said. “What I find ironic is that it’s a violation of federal law to reveal this kind of information. If they had this information and were leaking it, they’d be breaking the law.’’
“No pending FEC enforcement actions” Typical non-denial denial from a lawyer – a long with a threat to Bodell for leaking information.
I’m guessing MDE would love for Bodell to respond their questions:
1) If Bodell was stating the truth – bad news for the DFL.
2) If Bodell says he made unfounded accusations, then that proves that both he and Minnesota Progressive Project have no credibility.
BTW, I see very little good journalism in the from the mainstream media these days. That makes me wonder why you would attack two part-time bloggers for reporting the truth and asking questions.
