Republican Party of Minnesota Applauds Governor Pawlenty’s Proposed Constitutional Amendment to Cap State Spending
St. Paul- Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman Tony Sutton and Deputy Chairman Michael Brodkorb today issued the following statement regarding Governor Tim Pawlenty’s proposal to amend the state constitution by capping state general fund spending to the revenue the state of Minnesota collected during the previous budget period.
“Governor Pawlenty’s bold proposal for a constitutional amendment capping government spending is to be commended by all Minnesotans who value sensible government and fiscal sanity.  While this idea will no doubt face fierce opposition from Democrats intent on hiking taxes and making government bigger, it will benefit taxpayers who must foot the bill for the state’s spending. The Republican Party of Minnesota will do its part to make sure this reform measure goes to the voters in 2010.â€

You do know that none of Pawlenty’s past budget proposals would fly under this new rule. He was over the limit every time. I would like to see him address that shortcoming.
That being said, this idea is interesting.

Governor Pawlenty is dishonest. Isn’t it interesting that this proposal was announced smack dab between his Freedom First PAC fundraiser and his upcoming trip to Iowa?

I don’t like the amendment idea either. We shouldn’t be look back to revenues of the past cyle, we should be looking at the current.
In good times, the state should be putting money in the bank for rainy days. The fact is, the DFL wants to spend money as faster than it comes in. When the economy downturns, Democrats want to raise money to keep up the spending rate.
For all those who stick their hands out during goods times, they should stick them in their pockets during bad.
