RYBAK’S REAL RECORD ON CRIME
By Luke Hellier | November 24, 2009
Earlier today, Blois Olson had a piece published on MinnPost about the candidacy of Mayor RT Rybak for Governor. Â While the piece is mostly just promoting Rybak’s candidacy there was one glaring part that stuck out:
As Rybak prepares to create a statewide profile he will likely rely on two fundamental facts: While mayor, the reduction in crime in the city was significant. ( Source MinnPost 11/24/09)
I am not totally sure what the definition of significant is in this instance but here is a snap shot of violent crime statistics from Rybak’s term as mayor.
2002:
Murder – 31
Assault – 1184
Rape – 254
2003:
Murder – 47
Assault – 1768
Rape – 351
2004:
Murder – 54
Assault – 1837
Rape – 379
2005:
Murder – 49
Assault – 2277
Rape – 305
2006:
Murder – 59
Assault – 2437
Rape – 425
2007:
Murder – 45
Assault – 2419
Rape – 415
2008:
Murder – 39
Assault – 1977
Rape – 327

While some of these years the rates went down, I would never characterize these as significant. Â In fact, during Rybak’s first 5 years as Mayor the rate went up each year.
What’s even more stirring is that Rybak takes claim on his campaign website that crime has been reduced in Minneapolis. Yes, crime went down from 2006 to 2008, but each of these years was higher than Rybak’s first as Mayor of Minneapolis.
You can see a screen shot of Rybak’s site here.
When will Rybak come clean about his record? Will Rybak’s failure at combating crime hurt him in a general election for Governor?
