REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES RESPOND TO STRAW POLL

By Luke Hellier | February 3, 2010

The following are two responses from Republican candidates for governor about last night’s Republican Straw Poll -

Seifert for Governor:

Seifert Statement on Caucus Straw Poll Results

ST PAUL – Marty Seifert released the following statement today on the results of the Minnesota Republican Party gubernatorial straw poll results.

“We are very pleased and humbled with the results of last night’s straw poll.  While there is much work ahead, our grassroots team and financial network continues to grow throughout Minnesota.

It is amazing that nearly as many Republicans turned out for caucuses as Democrats last night.  Just two years ago, DFL turnout was three times higher than Republican turnout.  As I travel the state, it is clear that the DFL message of higher taxes, increased spending, and more government intrusion is falling flat with Minnesotans.  Last night’s DFL caucus turnout confirms this.

At this point in the race, our campaign is the only GOP campaign with a statewide grassroots network and the financial resources necessary to wage an aggressive campaign for the endorsement and for the general election.

Regardless of how you voted, I thank everyone for coming out to participate last night. Today, we will travel to Rochester and Mankato to continue to spread our message of limited government, private sector job creation, and better opportunities for future generations.”

Emmer for Governor:

Emmer Surges to Strong Finish in Republican Straw Poll

Straw poll results eerily similar to Pawlenty/Sullivan in 2002

Saint Paul – Tom Emmer surged to a strong second place finish last night in the Republican Party straw poll for governor, closing the gap to within ten points in what is now clearly a two person race.

“The race begins today,” said Emmer Campaign Manager David FitzSimmons. “We are closing the gap and feel really good about our momentum as we head to the all-important delegate phase. These results exceeded our expectations.”

Although pleased with their strong second place finish, the Emmer campaign was even more pleased with their endorsement prospects based on who was elected delegate. FitzSimmons pointed out that Emmer actually polled four points better than Governor Pawlenty did in 2002, going on to win the nomination against a better funded opponent.

“I congratulate my colleague on his victory last night and look forward to making our case to the delegates elected at the caucuses,” said Emmer.

“While high profile endorsements from Lt. Governor Molnau, Senator Rod Grams and State Representative Laura Brod helped with the momentum, it was our network of party activists that really turned out our supporters to the caucus,” said Emmer Campaign Manager David FitzSimmons. “That network is now poised to deliver the endorsement at the state convention.”

One Response to “REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES RESPOND TO STRAW POLL”

Great strategy on Team Emmer’s part: hide the terrible cash on hand numbers until too late so no one knows when they go into vote. Certainly, if people knew that their local state representative has more cash on hand than a state-wide candidate for Governor, they’d consider that gubernatorial candidacy a joke.
