DEMOCRATS UNCOMFORTABLE WITH MEFFERT

By Luke Hellier | March 23, 2010

Democrats are growing uncomfortable with Jim Meffert’s ties to lobbyists.  Meffert is running for the DFL endorsement for congress against Erik Paulsen.

The following article was recently posted:

What Kind of Politics Would Jim Meffert Bring to Washington?:

By Gavin Sullivan

By commentator on Gavin Sullivan’s website.

What kind of politics would Jim Meffert bring to Washington? Who exactly will he be “fighting for?” Perhaps he will be fighting for the folks his mentor and current lobbying partner Randy Morris “fights for.” They are both listed as the lobbyists for the optometrical association in Minnesota and Randy is one of Jim’s biggest donors. $1000.00 is no problem for Randy though with his disgusting list of clients. Here are a few of the highlights:

Allergan Inc – The wonderful folks who brought us Botox!

Bayer HealthCare LLC – Charges people suffering with liver cancer $4,900 each month for Nexavar.

Genentech Inc, a member of the Roche Group – These folks have recently come under attack for trying to keep a $60 competitor drug off the market so they can keep selling their drug Lucentis for $2,000. That’s cute.

Have a respiratory problem? That’s good news for Jim’s partner in crime. His client MedImmune LLC sells their drug Synagis for $998.81 per dose.

Merck – This $24 billion a year company was ordered to pay $4.85 Billion for their reckless promoting of Vioxx which likely killed thousands. They are well known for there extreme anti-union anti-labor policies which include the lock out of 730 union employees who ironically wanted decent health care as well as labor practices which resulted in a fifteen-week strike involving 4,000 employees. You may also remember their IRS settlement in which they paid $2.3 Billion for attempting to cheat on their taxes by setting up a shell company in Bermuda.

Monsanto – Perhaps the most impressive lobbyists around. With help from people like Jim they have passed laws which allow them to sue farmers for royalties when seeds from neighboring farms drift on to others. That is they sue farmers who don’t even know or want those seeds on their land! Monsanto controls 90% of the genetically modified seeds. But, they are diverse. They also manufactured the chemical weapon Agent Orange for the VIetnam war.

Novartis Pharmaceutical Corp – Would love for you to get leukemia so they can sell you Sprycel at $5,965.96 for a one month supply.

Is Jim Meffert, or James Meffert-Nelson (registered lobbyist name) going to work for us or continue to work for the health care lobby? I, for one, don’t want to find out. We have enough lobbyists in Congress.

Luke, does Gavin Sullivan speak for all Democrats, or is your headline extraordinarily misleading?

Luke, you’re quoting an anonymous comment on my blog–and attributing the statement to me? (A bit sleazy, no?)

    Gavin is right.

Now all we need is Luke’s apology and retraction.

Oh come on, Luke. This is ridiculous. I went to that website to see and he did not say that. A commenter did. Really!

Luke’s ethics are pretty clear here: link to a comment, call it an “article” instead of a comment, and attribute it to the wrong person. What kind of political points do you really think you score with these obvious sleazeball tactics?
