CQ DOWN ON MEFFERT

By Luke Hellier | April 12, 2010

Following up on my post from early yesterday morning about the DFL endorsing a slate of out-of-touch candidates for Congress, CQ Politics weighs in on Jim Meffert.

In Minnesota’s 3rd District, party delegates tapped Jim Meffert, a former president of the state PTA and chief executive of the Minnesota Optometric Association, to take on Paulsen in the 3rd district. Meffert won the endorsement in a close vote over forensic psychiatrist and military vet Maureen Hackett, who had shown willingness to self-fund and had more cash in the bank than Meffert at the end of the year.

The 3rd district was one of just a few to vote for Barack Obama for president in 2008 while sending a freshman Republican to the House, but Paulsen has been quick to establish himself and neither Meffert nor Hackett represent the sort of top-tier candidate that starts out as an automatic contender against the incumbent.
