STAR TRIBUNE CONFIRMS DAYTON PICK
By Luke Hellier | May 24, 2010
As reported on MDE last night, Sen. Mark Dayton will select Sen. Yvonne Prettner Solon of Duluth as his running mate.
The Star Tribune has confirmed the story.
In a sign that he will fight hard for votes among northern Democrats, former U.S. Sen. Mark Dayton picked Yvonne Prettner Solon as his gubernatorial running mate.
Dayton’s choice of the three-term state Senator from Duluth puts his stake in the ground in the 8th District, a DFL-heavy stretch of voters who tend to come out in all elections. He is vying against DFL-endorsed Margaret Anderson Kelliher and Matt Entenza in an August DFL primary.
He will announce the pick in Duluth Monday morning and file for the office Monday afternoon in St. Paul.
Prettner Solon had endorsed Mayor RT Rybak in the original DFL endorsement battle. Rybak has since backed Margaret Anderson Kelliher in the DFL Primary.
Update: This is Solon’s third favorite candidate for Governor. Solon had backed Tom Bakk’s campaign until he had dropped out before the DFL endorsement.
Prettner-Solon Originally Endorsed Rybak. Senate District 4 and inner Minneapolis are much alike, one reason why Sen. Mary Olson, DFL-Bemidji, endorsed Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak’s gubernatorial bid on Monday. She joined six other legislators at a State Capitol news conference Monday to endorse Rybak’s bid for the Democratic endorsement for governor. ‘Any of these contenders would be wonderful governors,’ Olson said of the slew of Democrats seeking to succeed Gov. Tim Pawlenty, ‘but I just feel that R.T. is the strongest candidate and I am particularly impressed with his appreciation of some of the issues we’re facing in rural Minnesota.’ Those issues include funding disparities in funding education and health care, plus the need for state Local Government Aid. Olson was joined by Sens. Yvonne Prettner Solon of Duluth, Jim Carlson of Eagan, Kevin Dahle of Northfield, Kathy Sheran of Mankato and John Doll of Burnsville, and Rep. Tina Liebling of Rochester.” (Brad Swenson, “Olson endorses Rybak for governor,” The Bemidji Pioneer, March 30, 2010)
While the DFL is steadily unified behind a single issue, raising taxes, this pick accentuates the DFL’s failure to unify behind a single candidate.
