AFL-CIO SKIPS ENDORSEMENT
By Luke Hellier | June 16, 2010
In a stunning blow to Margaret Kelliher’s campaign the labor giant AFL-CIO made no endorsement today at their meeting. After talking to people that have considerably more knowledge than I do about union politics this comes as a complete shock.
Others said that based purely on math Kelliher should have had the votes to secure the endorsement. The math is based on the support she has received from member unions of the AFL-CIO like Education Minnesota.
People with knowledge of union endorsements said that an earlier flap with the AFL-CIO sending out a press release naming Kelliher as the endorsed candidate may have caused her to lose the vote.
The Star Tribune reports:
The Minnesota AFL-CIO has decided against endorsing a candidate in the governor’s race, leaving the large labor federation neutral ahead of the August Democratic primary.
Three candidates interviewed Wednesday with representatives of unions that make up the AFL-CIO and the decision to skip endorsement came after.
Former U.S. Sen. Mark Dayton and House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher, both Democrats, were seen as the likeliest choices. Kelliher has collected the most labor endorsements, but Dayton has some large factions on his side. It took a super-majority for AFL-CIO endorsement.
