Brodkorb http://www.minnesotademocratsexposed.com/2007/02/12/ap-ciresi-wont-self-fund-senate-campaign/ WASHINGTON (AP) _ Attorney Mike Ciresi, who put nearly $5 million of his own money into his 2000 U.S. Senate race, said Monday he wasn't planning to self-fund again in his 2008 bid.

'No, we'll raise the money,' Ciresi said in a telephone interview. 'I think it's a better way to go.'

Ciresi, who revealed Sunday he was forming an exploratory committee as a DFL Senate candidate, said that he plans to formally announce his candidacy this spring. Comedian Al Franken is expected to announce his plans to run as a Democrat this week. Both men have their sights set on incumbent Sen. Norm Coleman, a Republican.

Ciresi, who lost the 2000 Democratic Senate nomination to Mark Dayton, said that he put his own money into that race because it was the first time he had run, and because Dayton went up early with ads.

'We had to step up and say here's where we're at,' said Ciresi.

Although Ciresi did not rule out putting some of his money into the 2008 race, he said, 'The intention is we're going to raise the money, and I believe we have the ability to do that.'" Source: Associated Press, February 12, 2007

I smell a flip-flop coming.  I'm also curious how much of Ciresi's statements today about not self-funding his campaign was dictated by Democrats raising concerns about the benefits to Coleman's campaign.

Brodkorb http://www.minnesotademocratsexposed.com/2006/06/12/2006-dfl-state-convention-day-final-thoughts-2/ It may surprise many of you, but I actually put some thought into my final post about the DFL convention.  I had a great time – everybody was really cool and I enjoyed meeting people on the other side of the aisle.   

I witness a DFL that was energized and hungry for victory.  I saw candidates, delegates, campaign and party staffers focused on defeating Republicans up and down the ballot in November. For two days I sat next to talented bloggers just as dedicated as Republican bloggers to their craft of providing rapid response and analysis to combat candidate spin doctors.

Below is my list of winners and losers at the 2006 DFL convention.

WINNERS (Not in order)

#1. Rick Nelson: I'm not sure what you do for a living, but you should quit your job and run conventions.  Both Republicans and Democrats would pay to have you keep their delegates in order.

#2. Steve Kelley: You gave two great speeches and I think most delegates appreciate your commitment to the DFL endorsement process.

#3. Tequila: You know what I am talking about.

#4. Bloggers: I don't care what anyone thinks – our coverage of the convention was better than anything reported by the MSM. 

#5. Brian Melendez: Since this was your first DFL convention as party chairman, I thought it was very organized.  But you were too damn nice and I'm still upset at you for being so polite. Damn you.

#6. Ron Carey and the Republican Party of Minnesota:  You didn't take the weekend off – you went down to Rochester and responded to every attack the DFL threw at Republican candidates.  It was the most aggressive response to any political convention.

LOSERS (Not in order)

#1. Mike Hatch: Your acceptance speech was a dud and it took you too many ballots to win the endorsement. 

#2. Tequila: You know what I am talking about.

#3. Becky Lourey: While your first speech was good – your final speech was problematic.  You fumbled the most important sentence when you announced you would be running in the primary (see you in September).

#4 : I heard many complaints about the siren.  This may be the last time I use it.

My favorite party of the convention was sitting next to my fellow bloggers.  It was nice to meet the people behind some of the most influential political blogs in Minnesota.  I am a better blogger and person for spending the weekend down in Rochester.

To the staff at the DFL Party, I want to thank you for being so nice and helpful.  I'm sure it was a distracting to know I was at your convention causing trouble.  But you treated me with respect and I'll never forget it. While I'm kinda hurt by Jess' comment that she hates almost everything about me (wink), I did have a great time.

5:55 p.m. – Thanks to Mike Hatch’s campaign, delegates will not be able to ask the candidates questions.

5:45 p.m. – There is a motion on the floor to allow another candidate Q & A.

5:21 p.m. – SIXTH BALLOT RESULTS – CONFIRMED RESULTS

1. Mike Hatch 665 or 51.3%

2. Steve Kelley 606.5 or 46.8%

Steve Kelley lost 0.1%, Hatch picked-up 1.5%.

4:22 p.m. – FIFTH BALLOT RESULTS – CONFIRMED RESULTS

1. Mike Hatch 646.5 or 49.8%

2. Steve Kelley 609 or 46.9%

Steve Kelley picked-up 13.8%, Hatch picked-up 5%.

1. Mike Hatch 580.5 or 44.8%

3:28 p.m. – Becky Lourey is speaking…due to the rules, Lourey has been dropped from endorsement. She is running in the primary.

1. Mike Hatch: 512.5 or 39.4%

2. Becky Lourey: 403.5 or 31%

12:05 p.m. – This is a very close vote.

11:42 a.m. – The roll call will begin soon. There are 1,300 total votes and it will 780 votes to win the endorsement.

11:31 a.m. – The Q & A has ended and the balloting is about to begin.

11:04 a.m. – The Q & A has begun.

10:58 a.m. – Kelley has finished his speech. He kept the delegates excited by asking questions with the answer “yes we can!” He gave a great speech for this crowd. It may be a long day.

10:51 a.m. – Kelley reminded the delegates that he will abide by the DFL endorsement and not run in the primary.

10:49 a.m. – Steve Kelley is speaking.

10:44 a.m. – Steve Kelley’s presentation has begun.

10:42 a.m. – Becky Lourey gave a great speech – the crowd went nuts!

10:36 a.m. – It was a short video and Becky Lourey has now started to speak.

10:34 a.m. – A video about Becky Lourey is playing.

10:30 a.m. – Becky Lourey’s presentation started a few minutes ago. Tim Baylor, Becky Lourey’s running mate, is speaking.

10:18 a.m. – Ole Savior has started to speak – he walked to the podium with a “IMPEACH BUSH NOW” sign.

10:05 a.m. – Hatch has started to speak.

10:01 a.m. – The speaking order is 1. Mike Hatch 2. Ole Savior 3. Becky Lourey. 4. Steve Kelley

9:54 a.m. – Congresswoman Betty McCollum just nominated Steve Kelley. I don’t know the song that is playing. The song is called “Let the day begin” by the Call

9:48 a.m. – Becky Lourey’s name was just placed into nomination, followed by “Don’t Stop” by Fleetwood Mac and a song by Prince.

9:37 a.m. – The nominations for governor have started – Ole Savior was the first candidate nominated. His demonstration was Bruce Springsteen’s “Glory Days” – Hatch’s name was just nominated and Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” played for a few seconds. After each candidate is nominated, their supporters are allowed 5 minutes to demonstrate. Hatch’s drumline is getting the crowd excited.

9:33 a.m. – Keith Ellison is at the convention. He is doing in interview with Air America in the hallwall. I wonder if he will address the convention?

9:24 a.m. – David Liebow who blogs at U-DFL Blog is live-blogging the convention as is REW/Robin Marty of Power Liberal.

9:15 a.m. – The DFLers in this convention hall love Feingold.

9:10 a.m. – U.S. Senator Russ Feingold is speaking. Feingold is mention as a potential presidential candidate in 2008. Minnesota supporters of his candidacy have already started a website.

9:02 a.m. – I just spoke with former state auditor Judi Dutcher. She didn’t have a sticker on, but I assume she is supporting Mike Hatch. She said she wasn’t staying the whole day as she had a wedding to attend. I first met Dutcher in 1998 when she was the endorsed GOP candidate for state auditor.

8:42 a.m. – I was at the convention center by 7:15 a.m.. Hatch’s campaign was setting up for a 8:15 a.m. rally. His supporters are walking around the convention hall in a conga-line along with a drumline. The convention hall is dominated by Hatch’s supporters.

Rochester- Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman Ron Carey today released the following statement regarding today's DFL endorsement of Mike Hatch.

"Mike Hatch has been running for governor for nearly 20 years and broke his word this year by running for governor a third time. During that 20 years, his fellow DFLers have called him a 'chameleon,' an 'opportunist,' and 'a man willing to sell his soul just to get elected.' No matter how extreme the makeover Hatch attempts, Minnesotans aren't going to trust someone with that kind of opportunistic and inconsistent record."

"A new website that asks visitors to choose "which DFLer will launch the most negative personal attack on a Republican" highlighted a multifaceted GOP response to Friday's start of the DFL state convention.

The interactive feature is part of www.republicansloverochester.com, which the state GOP said spotlights 'GOP accomplishments for southeastern Minnesota" through new state funding for bioscience, higher education and transportation.

The state GOP also released a Web video titled: 'Amy's Hero: A Republican Party of Minnesota Salute to Mark Dayton,' which it said recognizes the retiring Democratic U.S. senator's "far-left ineffectiveness and bizarre behavior" and his record as "a complete failure."

"To the strains of Bruce Springsteen's 'Born to Run,' Hennepin County Attorney Amy Klobuchar took the DFL endorsement for U.S. Senate after one ballot at the state DFL convention on Friday, promising "real change in Washington."

Warning of a bruising fight ahead with GOP endorsee Mark Kennedy in one of the tightest races in the country, Klobuchar said Republicans 'will throw everything at us. They'll Swift Boat us. They'll smear us.' But, she said, 'the truth is on our side.'

Klobuchar was joined on stage at the Mayo Civic Center by her husband and 10-year-old daughter as she promised to reach out to moderate Republicans and independents."

I was promised a balloon drop, but there are no balloons.

5:40 p.m. - Klobuchar is the DFL endorsed candidate for U.S. Senate.

Klobuchar received 967 votes out of 1225 cast.

78% of the vote.

20% voted for “no endorsement.”

5:34 p.m. - The results will be announced in 5 minutes.

5:29 p.m. – We’re still waiting for the results of the 1st ballot for endorsement. Minnesota Left is also live blogging the convention.

4:42 p.m. - Peace in the Precincts is pushing a “no endorsement” vote on the first ballot as a statement against the war in Iraq.

4:35 p.m. - The balloting for U.S. Senate has begun.

4:21 p.m. - Phil Ratte has the best quote so far: “We need to start attacking the oil companies and not oil producing countries.”

4:02 p.m. - Klobuchar’s done speaking. The three candidates are now answering questions – this may the first time Klobuchar will have to take a position on an issue.

3:46 p.m. - Klobuchar’s speaking.

3:40 p.m. - Charley Underwood spoke. Klobuchar’s presentation has started.

3:25 p.m. – Phil Raytay was doing a great job talking about alternative energy, but then he started talking about the Canada, Mexico, and the United States becoming one country called “North American Union.”

3:09 p.m. - Phil Raytay (sic) and Charely Underwood were also nominated. Klobuchar’s got competition.

3:04 p.m. - Amy Klobuchar’s name was just placed into nomination by Tony Sertich.

2:10 p.m. - REW/Robin Marty of DFL Senate is live-blogging. She just posted an interesting rumor about the upcoming U.S. Senate endorsement.

1:56 p.m. - Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer just gave a end of the world speech that fired-up the convention. He also mentioned Keith Ellison’s name and the place erupted. This is the type of speech I’ll be writing more about.

1:24 p.m. - I’ve updated my picture page.

12:16 p.m. - The resolutions are reviewed by sections and delegates can request specific resolutions to be pulled for consideration. It takes support of at least 15% percent of the delegates for a resolution to be pulled for discussion.

12:13 p.m. - The convention is now reviewing resolutions for consideration.

12:01 p.m. – I met Aaron Landry of minvolved and Jon-David at mnpublius. Both are live-blogging so visit their blogs.

11:56 a.m. - Melendez just played a clip of Pawlenty’s speech. I’ll have more on this later today.

11:21 a.m. - Hatch is working the crowd. He has two staffers in bright lime-green shirts and one staffer in a dark suit. The delegates are getting their picture taken with Hatch. Hatch skipped so many debates, many people may be seeing him for the first time in person.

11:18 a.m. – I’ve heard from a few delegates who commented about the low attendence.

11:16 a.m. - Mike Hatch is in the convention hall. I was here before Hatch.

11:04 a.m. - The convention is in recess for the next 10-15 minutes so the credentials report can be finalzed. According to the preliminary credentials report, 498 delegates were registered. This is very low.

10:54 a.m. - DFL Party Chairman Brian Melendez runs a great convention and you can thank him by stopping by room 9** of the Kahler Hotel.

10:48 a.m. – I haven’t seen Mike Hatch. Becky Lourey and Steve Kelley are talking with delegates. Hatch was a no-show at two delegate events this morning.

10:35 a.m. - I’ve updated my picture page.

10:25 a.m. - The convention is in recess until 10:50 a.m. to allow for election of delegation chairmen and chairwomen.

10:21 a.m. - Megan Thomas spoke and mentioned that a “meditation” or “quite” room is available for those wishing to escape the noise of the convention. Also since some delegates have allergies to certain smells, people shouldn’t wear too much perfume and/or deodorant.

10:13 a.m. - I’m sitting next to David Liebow who blogs at U-DFL Blog and he is live blogging the convention. I’m already angry at him because he prefers “Family Guy” and “Futurama” or “The Simpsons.” Make sure to read his blog for updates.

10:08 a.m. - The convention began at 10:03. Representative Tina Liebling (sic?) and Representative Andy Welti are welcoming the DFL to Rochester.

9:56 a.m. - I’ve got power.

9:50 a.m. - My battery sucks down juice faster than Mayor Quimby’s wife at an open bar. I’ll be back online soon.

9:39 a.m. - I’m in “blogger row” and the accomodations for bloggers are very comfortable. I’m in urgent need of a power outlet.

Attorney General Mike Hatch prowled the convention floor with a dim view of the endorsement process.

'Everything that goes on now is inside baseball,' said Hatch, who won election in 1998 without actively seeking the party's endorsement. 'Nobody [cares] . . . until six weeks before the election.'

Hatch to postpone No. 2 selection until after DFL convention

Attorney General Mike Hatch, one of three leading contenders for the DFL endorsement for governor, said Wednesday he will wait until after this weekend's party convention to name a running mate. The Democrat said if he gets the endorsement, he would seek DFL approval of his running mate through the party's central committee or another party convention.

Hatch said he has a short list of three women he's considering for the second spot on his ticket. One is in the government and at least one is in the private sector. He said he hasn't formally asked any of the three. None of the potential running mates are willing to participate in the endorsing contest because they would have to quit their current jobs or make major lifestyle changes prematurely, Hatch said.

"Some are just in positions where it would be difficult for them to go to a political convention,'' he said. He added: "It's going to be done because I believe that he or she is the best qualified, not because it's going to give some political benefit at a convention. So I think it's best to wait.''

The other top DFL candidates for governor named running mates last week. State Sen. Becky Lourey picked former Minnesota Viking Tim Baylor, while state Sen. Steve Kelley tapped Rep. Ruth Johnson of St. Peter. Source: Associated Press, June 7, 2006
