The Minnesota Democrats Exposed BS meeter went off the charts when I read that Team Madia’s spokesman was claiming that Madia has been running a “positive” campaign:

“‘We’re [Team Madia] running a very positive, issue-oriented campaign,’ Pollock said.” Source: Sun Newspapers, September 23, 2008

The reality is that Team Madia isn’t running a “positive” campaign, as Pollock was caught sending out a press releases “ripping” Erik Paulsen:

“Third District DFL congressional candidate Ashwin Madia’s communication director just forwarded along a press release ripping his Republican opponent for a typographical error.” Source: MPR/Polinaut, September 12, 2008

During the battle for the DFL endorsement in the 3rd CD, Madia’s rival Terri Bonoff complained that Madia supporters were engaging in “whisper campaigns…”

As I noted here, whether it has been late-night push-polling, anonymous smear videos posted online, the theft of Paulsen lawn signs, or distortions of Paulsen’s record, it clear that the negative campaign tactics in the 3rd CD are unprecedented.

St. Paul- Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman Ron Carey today released the following statement regarding Ashwin Madia’s refusal to characterize Iran as a “threat.”

“Despite Iran’s bellicose actions, pursuit of nuclear weapons, and active support of terrorist organizations, Ashwin Madia still refuses to acknowledge Iran as a ‘threat.’  In response to a question posed at Tuesday’s JCRC Third Congressional District debate, Madia said he stood by his previous statements that Iran does not constitute a threat. For a candidate to suggest the world’s most active state sponsor of terrorism is not a threat begs the question: what will it take for Ashwin Madia to consider Iran a threat?”

Madia: “Iran Is Not A Threat.” “The short answer to the question is no, Iran is not a threat. However, Iran is still a concern. It is true they still do have the capability to enrich Uranium; it’s true they still need more transparency in their nuclear process. It’s true they fund Hamas in Hezbollah. It’s true they are not partners for peace in the Arab/Israeli situation.” (Ashwin Madia, Iraq Forum, December 11, 2007)

“But Madia, a military veteran who served in Iraq, stands by his statement.” (Curtis Gilbert, “Minn. 3rd District Candidates Spar on Taxes, Foreign Policy,” Minnesota Public Radio, September 23, 2008)

A Primer On Iran:

Iran Has Test-Fired A Missile That Can Reach Israel. “Iran test fired a new missile today that can deliver a 1-ton warhead on Israel or U.S. bases in the region, hitting a nerve in the tense Middle East as well as in nervous oil markets. The televised firing of Iran’s new Shahab 3 missile, which Iran says can travel 1,250 miles, was a blatant warning that it can retaliate against Israel and the United States if it is attacked. Israel and Iran have been engaged in an escalating war of words, with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad saying Israel should be wiped off the map and Israel warning that it may have to carry out an airstrike to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear arsenal.” (Jonathan Karl, “Iran Fires Missile, Stokes Global Jitters,” ABC News, July 9, 2008)

Iranian General: “Our Hands Are Always On The Trigger.” “Iran launched nine missiles during war games today near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a waterway that carries 40 percent of the world’s oil supply. One of the missile launches, broadcast on Iranian TV, was a new version of the Shahab 3 missile. ‘Our hands are always on the trigger, and our missiles are ready for launch,’ Gen. Hossein Salami, the Air Force commander of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards, told Iran’s official IRNA news agency today.” (Jonathan Karl, “Iran Fires Missile, Stokes Global Jitters,” ABC News, July 9, 2008)

The State Department’s Recently Released Annual Terrorism Report Says That Iran Is The World’s “Most Active” State Sponsor Of Terrorism. “Iran remained the most active state sponsor of terrorism. Elements of its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were directly involved in the planning and support of terrorist acts throughout the region and continued to support a variety of groups in their use of terrorism to advance their common regional goals. Iran provides aid to Palesti nian terrorist groups, Lebanese Hizballah, Iraq-based militants, and Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.” (“Country Reports On Terrorism,” U.S. Department Of State, Office Of The Coordinator For Counterterrorism, 4/30/08)

Ahmadinejad Referred To Israel As A “Stinking Corpse” And Said It Was “On Its Way To Annihilation.” “President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called Israel a ‘stinking corpse’ that was doomed to fail, and warned countries that they would ‘burn in the fire of their people’s hatred’ if they helped Israel, the news agency IRNA reported.’Today the reason for Zionist regime’s existence is questioned, and this regime is on its way to annihilation,’ he said in a speech on the 60th anniversary of the Jewish state.” (Nazila Fathi, “Iran: A Hate Note On Israel’s Birthday,” The New York Times, 5/9/08)

Ahmadinejad Previously Said Israel Should Be Wiped Off The Map And Denied That The Holocaust Occurred. “Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said in the past he wants to wipe Israel off the map and dismissed the Holocaust as a myth.” (Nick Wadhams, “Israel: No Greater Threat To World’s Values Than The Leaders Of Iran,” The Associated Press, 9/21/06)

‘Mr. Madia at one time said Iran is not a threat. I’ll say it again. At one time, Ashwin Madia said Iran is not a threat,’ Paulsen said.

And Paulsen disagrees.

‘It’s a threat not only to Israel.
“Ashwin Madia persistently refuses to do the right thing and return the tainted campaign contributions he accepted from New York’s Charlie Rangel.  Rangel has recently been under fire for alleged tax abuses and repeated violations of New York housing laws.  To top that, Rangel recently sunk to a new low – referring to Governor Sarah Palin as ‘disabled.’  As an attorney, Madia should respect the law and give the nearly $50,000 he’s received from Rangel to charity.  As someone who hopes to succeed Jim Ramstad, Madia should take a stand against Rangel and denounce his unscrupulous attacks against Sarah Palin.”

The MN GOP issued a very tough release this morning in response to the the lies being pushed by Madia’s liberal allies and fundraisers.  As he made clear in the debate on Tuesday evening, Representative Erik Paulsen doesn’t support privatizing Social Security. Paulsen in fact wants to preserve Social Security and also supports negotiating (and actually reforming the process) to lower prescription drug costs.  Madia was dead wrong when he said the CBO estimated “$30 billion a year…” savings.  Even the DFL didn’t make that silly claim.

Thankfully for residents of the 3rd CD, the MN GOP is here to set the record straight and exposed the lies of Madia and his liberal allies and fundraisers in the blogosphere.

###

St. Paul – Republican Party of Minnesota Chair Ron Carey today released the following statement following DFL candidate Ashwin Madia’s repeated false statements regarding savings from pharmaceutical negotiations, falsely citing the Congressional Budget Office and distorting Paulsen’s own words.

“Ashwin Madia falsely contradicted Erik Paulsen when he said that the Congressional Budget Office reported there would be $30 billion in savings if Medicare Part D were to negotiate for drug prices.  Rep. Paulsen was correct: the Congressional Budget Office has said it would only have a negligible effect on drug prices. In addition, the MN DFL falsely claimed that Rep. Paulsen supports privatizing Social Security when he clearly stated ‘Social Security absolutely has to be preserved and protected, without a doubt.’

“Whether it’s lying about Rep. Paulsen’s support for Social Security privatization, lying about the CBO’s analysis of Medicare Part D, or lying to DFLers about for whom he voted in the 2000 election, Madia and his allies have shown he cannot be trusted by residents of the 3rd Congressional District.”

“Now Hold On A Second, The Congressional Budget Office Has Said That You’re Gonna Save $30 Billion A Year…” – Ashwin Madia In Response To Rep. Paulsen Saying The Congressional Budget Office Found Negotiations Would Have A “Negligible Effect” On Medicare Costs. (Ashwin Madia, AARP debate, September 16, 2008)

Congressional Budget Office Letter: “By itself, giving the Secretary broad authority to negotiate drug prices would not provide the leverage necessary to generate lower prices than those obtained by PDPs and thus would have a negligible effect on Medicare drug spending.” (Congressional Budget Office Letter to Sen. Ron Wyden, April 10, 2007, http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/79xx/doc7992/DrugPriceNegotiation.pdf)

Madia Allies Falsely Claim Paulsen Wouldn’t Protect Social Security. “Similarly, Paulsen, who has accepted thousands of dollars from the insurance and banking industries, refused to rule out privatizing Social Security… (DFL Press Release: “DFL Party: ‘Without A Doubt’ – Paulsen Is No Friend To Minnesota’s Seniors,’ www.dfl.org, September 17, 2008)

Paulsen Called For Social Security Preservation In Debate. “Social Security absolutely has to be preserved and protected, without a doubt. That is a contract. That is a bond that has been made with workers through the government. That needs to be carried on. The government should provide any incentives. I support incentives to provide additional savings that can be done on top of regular retirement, whether it’s through additional 401k savings, universal savings accounts, that’s appropriate. We have almost essentially a negative savings rate here in the United States and people need to set aside a little bit more money for their long term retirement.” (Erik Paulsen, AARP debate, September 16, 2008)

Ashwin Madia Claimed He Voted For Al Gore In 2000 In Lead-Up To DFL Endorsement. “DFL 3rd District congressional candidate Ashwin Madia says he misspoke when he told Minnesota Public Radio that he voted for Al Gore in 2000. Madia now says he voted for George W. Bush that year. … MPR: 2000 election, of course, McCain wasn’t the nominee. Did you actually vote for Bush in 2000? Madia: No. MPR: You didn’t? You voted for Al Gore? Madia: Yes.” (Curtis Gilbert, “Madia’s Misstatement,”MPR’s Polinaut Blog, April 16, 2008, http://minnesota.publicradio.org/collections/special/columns/polinaut/archive/2008/04/madias_misstate.shtml)

St. Paul – Republican Party of Minnesota Chair Ron Carey today released the following statement after Ashwin Madia’s campaign declared they would keep money from Rep. Charles Rangel and would not be calling on Rangel to resign his leadership post.

“Ashwin Madia’s refusal to disassociate himself from Rep. Charles Rangel despite the numerous questions surrounding his personal, political and business dealings is indefensible. Even his campaign spokesman said that a candidate’s fundraising is a “good indication of how you’ll conduct yourself in Congress’ and Madia’s made the decision to go-along and get-along with the out of touch Democrat leadership in the U.S. House even when they are under a cloud of ethical controversies.  The indications are clear – despite his campaign promises, he will be a rubberstamp for party leaders. Minnesotans deserve a better from someone who aspires to replace Jim Ramstad.”

Madia Campaign Spokesman: “The Way You Raise Money Is A Good Indication Of How You’ll Conduct Yourself In Congress.” “‘I do think there are people who will decide who to vote for in this race based on who is giving money to these candidates,’ Pollock said. ‘The way you raise money is a good indication of how you’ll conduct yourself in Congress.’” (Curtis Gilbert, “Madia And Paulsen Camps Trade Attacks Over ‘Dirty Money,’” MPR’s Polinaut Blog, September 15 , 2008, )

St. Paul – Republican Party of Minnesota Chair Ron Carey today called for Al Franken, Ashwin Madia and Tim Walz to join the New York Times in calling for Charles Rangel to step down from his chairmanship of the House Ways and Means committee and return all Rangel funds.

“When the New York Times is calling for a top Democrat to step down from his leadership post in the U.S. House, it’s clear Rangel is someone that Al Franken, Tim Walz and Ashwin Madia should think twice about embracing.  Whether it’s fellow tax dodger Al Franken and Tim Walz accepting $10,000 from Rangel’s PAC or Ashwin Madia gladly accepting tens of thousands of dollars in fundraising help, these two candidates have aligned themselves with someone with a litany of ethical lapses, legal issues, and pending investigations. I call on Franken, Walz and Madia to join the New York Times editorial board in calling for the resignation of Charles Rangel as the House Ways and Means Committee chairman – and to immediately return the thousands of dollars in tainted money they have received.”

New York Times Calls For Rep. Rangel To Step Down. “Mounting embarrassment for taxpayers and Congress makes it imperative that Representative Charles Rangel step aside as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee while his ethical problems are investigated.  This recommendation does not come easily, considering the New York Democrat’s four decades of service in Congress. But Mr. Rangel himself has felt obliged to request three separate House ethics inquiries of his behavior. While denying serious improprieties, Mr. Rangel concedes that he has not lived up to the “higher standard” expected of members of Congress.” (Editorial, “Chairman Rangel,” New York Times, September 14, 2008)

Al Franken Has Taken $10,000 From New York Congressman Charles Rangel’s PAC.  On June 27, 2008, Al Franken took $10,000 from New York Congressman Charles Rangel’s National Leadership PAC.  (Itemized Receipts, Al Franken For Senate, July 2008 FEC Quarterly Report, June 27, 2008)

Madia For Congress Among The Campaigns Benefitting From The “Rangel Victory Fund.” (“Rangel Victory Fund” Statement of Organization, www.fec.gov)

Madia Received $35,537.61 From The Rangel Victory Fund On August 6, 2008.   (www.fec.gov, accessed September 8, 2008)

Madia Received $10,000 From Rangel’s National Leadership PAC.  (www.fec.gov, accessed September 15, 2008)

Madia Received $4,000 From Rangel For Congress (www.fec.gov, accessed September 15, 2008)

Walz For Congress Received $10,000 From Rangel’s National Leadership PAC For This Cycle And $5,000 In 2006. (www.fec.gov, accessed September 15, 2008)

Walz Received $4,000 From Rangel For Congress In 2008 And $2,000 In 2006. (www.fec.gov, accessed September 15, 2008)

Washington – In yet another embarrassing report, Rep. Charlie Rangel, Chairman of the powerful, tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, has finally admitted that he owes “several thousands of dollars” in back taxes to the federal, state and city government after he failed repeatedly to disclose rental income he’s received for years from a beachfront vista on an exclusive part of Dominican Republic. His tax “savings” was passed along to Democratic candidates, including Ashwin Madia.

To date, Madia (D-MN) has benefitted from Charlie Rangel’s ethical void, receiving $49537.61 from Rangel’s various fundraising accounts for Democratic candidates.

Today’s New York Times reported Rangel’s personal revelation that, despite having said earlier he does not owe federal back taxes, his accountants have found that he will have to pay “a modest amount” in back taxes:
“Representative Charles B. Rangel, chairman of the Congressional committee that writes the nation’s tax code, failed to pay an unspecified amount in federal taxes during the past five years on rental income from a villa he owns in the Dominican Republic, his lawyer said on Tuesday.

“Mr. Rangel, a Harlem Democrat who is chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, has owned the beachfront house at the Punta Cana resort and club since 1988, but never declared the $75,000 in rental income he has earned either on his tax returns or on his Congressional financial disclosure form.

“…his lawyer, Lanny Davis, said that the accountants had since revised their calculations and determined that Mr. Rangel would owe ‘a modest amount’ to the federal government for unpaid taxes over the last five years. Mr. Davis said Mr. Rangel was likely to owe both the state and the city a similar amount over the same period. The combined total of back taxes owed to the city, state and federal governments will probably be “several thousands of dollars,” Mr. Davis said.

“Now that Charlie Rangel has finally admitted to owing thousands of dollars after circumventing the very tax laws he has authored, it’s time for Ashwin Madia to admit that he took his ethically-tainted cash and cough it up,” said NRCC spokesman Ken Spain. “Madia stood by the embattled Harlem Congressman as he defrauded New York City taxpayers with his four apartments and now that he has hired Bill Clinton’s former lawyer and admitted guilt, he should give up the money or explain why he finds it necessary to hold on to scandal-ridden cash.”

Charlie Rangel writes the laws, and then dodges them, but Ashwin Madia doesn’t find a problem with this.  Is this an indication of what Madia would do if elected to Congress?

Washington – Ashwin Madia, Democratic candidate in Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District, has released a new ad in which he says that, “we need to change the way they see things in Congress so we can get our economy moving again.” Unfortunately, Madia’s plans would only hamper Minnesota’s middle class by raising taxes by thousands of dollars.

In a candidate forum in January, he stated that he was “against the tax rebate plans that are being put out right now,” which put money back into the pockets of Minnesotans. In another forum, Madia stated “we’ve got the let the Bush tax cuts expire.”

According to the U.S. Treasury, if the tax cuts were to expire, middle class Americans all over the country would feel the pinch:

115 million taxpayers would see an average increase of $1,716
84 million women would see their taxes increase by approximately $1,970
48 million married couples with children would see an increase of over $2,700
12 million single parents would get an increase of over $1,000
17 million senior citizens would have their taxes increase by over $2,000
26 million small business owners would see their taxes increase by over $3,000

“Ashwin Madia’s tax hike agenda wouldn’t help the economy, it would hinder it,” said NRCC spokesman Ken Spain. “Instead of trying to help the Minnesota middle class, he’d rather be another rubberstamp for Washington’s tax-and-spend agenda.”

Ashwin Madia should be up front with the voters in Minnesota that when it comes to the economy, his and the Democrats’ agenda would only further hurt the economy and middle class families.

Washington- Ethically-embattled New York Rep. Charlie Rangel has certainly had a scandal-plagued summer of shame.  Just this week it was revealed that Rangel failed to declare $75,000 in rental income on his posh tropical vacation villa.

“‘Charlie Rangel is the designated leader on tax policy in the Democrat-led Congress, but while he is authoring massive tax hikes to exact on middle-class Americans, he is apparently dodging the IRS at all costs,’ said Ken Spain, spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee.” (New York Post, 9/6/08)

Not only have Rangel’s questionable activities sparked a House Ethics Committee inquiry, but now the National Legal and Policy Center has filed a complaint with the Justice Department to investigate Rangel’s dealings.

But amidst his growing list of questionable activities, Rangel took the time this summer to raise truck loads of campaign cash for some of his favorite Democrat recruits under the guise of a birthday bash:

Dan Seals (IL-10) Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â $41,217.45

Dan Maffei (NY-25) Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â $57,670.25

Debbie Halvorson (IL-11)Â Â Â Â Â $39,788.93

John Boccieri (OH-16) Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â $44,200.45

Linda Stender (NJ-07) Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â $51,062.79

Ashwin Madia (MN-03) Â Â Â Â Â Â Â $35,537.61

Eric Massa (NY-29) Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â $39,922.54

Michael McMahon (NY-13)Â $46,582.68

Walter Minnick (ID-01) Â Â Â Â Â Â Â $39,158.73

Now these same Democrat candidates are spewing rhetoric about wanting to “change Washington,” while they’re already partying with a scandal-scarred Congressman who also happens to be Washington’s most notorious tax-hiker.

By keeping Rangel’s cash, Ashwin Madia is admitting he’ll do anything it takes to win — even if it means associating with an entrenched, ethically-challenged New York politician who’s part of the reason Congress has a nine percent approval rating.  If sent to DC, Ashwin Madia will only serve as an enabler of business as usual in Washington. That’s not change.

St Paul – Republican Party of Minnesota Chair Ron Carey today released the following statement in reaction to Ashwin Madia’s newest campaign ad.

“Ashwin Madia’s new campaign advertisement featuring Madia jogging, actually portrays the message of a far-left candidate running away from his own record and rhetoric. Whether it’s running away from the fact the he broke his pledge not to accept corporate PAC contributions or his record of supporting massive tax increases, Madia should do the hard-working families of the 3rd Congressional District a favor and just keep on running right out of the district.”

Madia Opposes 2001-2003 Tax Cuts. “The candidates agree – or come close – on some issues. For example, both oppose continuing President Bush’s tax cuts, and both support the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal.” (Harvey Rockwood, “Bonoff, Madia Appear Headed For Nomination Fight For DFL Endorsement In 3rd Congressional District,” Sun Newspapers, April 1, 2008)

Madia Evasive When Asked About Extending 2001-2003 Tax Cuts In Front Of Business Group. “Of course I support extending tax cuts for 98% of earners in this country.  Of course I support extending tax cuts for small businesses.  The only point that I am making is we need to be thoughtful and measured about this.  This discussion needs to go beyond ‘are you going to let them expire or aren’t you.’” (Ashwin Madia, Twin West Chamber Of Commerce Debate, August 21, 2008)

Ashwin Madia Lies About Corporate PAC Contributions. “’It’s a 50-50 district. It’s one of the top ten races in the whole country right now, mostly likely to flip from Republican to Democrat,’ Madia told the crowd. ‘We’ve raised about $1.5 million, so far. I haven’t taken a dime of corporate PAC money this entire time. We’ve been doing it brick by brick, inch by inch. The poll numbers look good. We’ve got a great field operation. We’ve got great mentors. We’ve got the best volunteers in the entire country.’” (Curtis Gilbert, “Madia Takes Gamble And Heads To Denver,” MPR, August 26, 2008)

Madia’s Campaign Acknowledges Contribution From Corporate PAC. “The Madia release said ‘Madia has never renounced money from individuals or partnerships.’  One of the contributions came from a New Jersey-based firm called Sterns & Weinroth, which is organized as a ‘professional corporation,’ and not a partnership. Pollock said the campaign was returning that $500 donation, a gesture he called ‘symbolic.’” (Curtis Gilbert, “Polinaut: Paulsen, Madia Camps Trade Attacks Over PACs,” MPR, August 20, 2008)

Madia: “What I Haven’t Been Taking Money From Is Corporate PACs.” “What I haven’t been taking money from is corporate PACs. And the reason I haven’t is because I think right now that corporations exercise too much influence in Washington D.C…whether it’s the energy companies, insurance companies or the pharmaceutical companies… and I think it’s undeniable that they have effected policy by paying…by funding campaigns of both parties, and so I’m proud of the fact that I’m not taking money from them.” (Midday, Minnesota Public Radio, April 11, 2008)

August: Madia’s Campaign Manager Says He Will Not Accept Any Corporate PAC Money. “Madia has called for removing corporate tax breaks for oil companies, something Paulsen did not address in his presentation. Rosenberg said Madia will not accept any corporate PAC money from the energy industry or any other corporate political-action committee.” (Paul Wahl, “Paulsen Calls For Energy Plan That Boosts Use Of Wind, Solar And Nuclear,” MN Sun, August 13, 2008)

St. Paul – Republican Party of Minnesota Chair Ron Carey today released the following statement regarding Ashwin Madia’s evasive answers to a simple question about the extension of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts.

“Despite a very simple question from the moderator about whether candidates supported the extension of the 2001-2003 tax cuts, Ashwin Madia had to take two bites at the apple before partially admitting that he wouldn’t support the full extension of the tax cuts. In tough economic times, the last thing working families and small business owners need is a tax increase, and the 2001-2003 tax cuts are vital to a strong economy.  Madia’s liberal roots were revealed in his failure to support the full extension of the tax cuts.”

First Attempt:

“Sure…well it’s election season, so I guess it’s time for all of us to come to you and that’s when politicians come to you and they’ll come to you and tell you how many taxes they are going to cut or how much more money they are going to give in your pocketbook and we all come to you with our different tax cut plans, and we will see who can cut the most.  Umm, I’m not going to play.” (Ashwin Madia, Twin West Chamber Of Commerce Debate, August 21, 2008)

Second Attempt:

“Of course I support extending tax cuts for 98% of earners in this country.  Of course I support extending tax cuts for small businesses.  The only point that I am making is we need to be thoughtful and measured about this.  This discussion needs to go beyond ‘are you going to let them expire or aren’t you.’” (Ashwin Madia, Twin West Chamber Of Commerce Debate, August 21, 2008)

Flashback: Madia Previously Stated His Opposition To 2001-2003 Tax Cuts

Madia Opposes 2001-2003 Tax Cuts. “The candidates agree – or come close – on some issues. For example, both oppose continuing President Bush’s tax cuts, and both support the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal.” (Harvey Rockwood, “Bonoff, Madia Appear Headed For Nomination Fight For DFL Endorsement In 3rd Congressional District,” Sun Newspapers, April 1, 2008)

Madia Hints At Supporting Tax Increases – Says We Should “Make Some Hard Choices” To Pay Down Debt. “I’m going to ask voters whether they want to continue with the borrow-and-spend policies of the past several years and pass on a crippling debt to their kids, or whether we want to make some hard choices and try and pay down that debt.” (Pig’s Eye Podcast, www.startribune.com, March 17, 2008)

Madia Again Says The Wealthiest Americans Aren’t Paying “Their Fair Share Of Taxes” “This means we all need to make adjustments on our energy use – through a coordinated national energy strategy – and it means that all Americans, including the wealthiest, need to pay their fair share of taxes.” (Joe Bodell, “Live Blog with Ashwin Madia,” Minnesota Monitor website, December 3, 2007, accessed August 12, 2008)

Ashwin Madia’s campaign, while claiming they won’t accept corporate PAC money, accepting a contribution from a PAC with “corporation federal PAC” in their name.  Please read the complete release from the Republican Party of Minnesota.

###

St. Paul – Republican Party of Minnesota Chair Ron Carey today released the following statement regarding Ashwin Madia’s acceptance of corporate PAC donation

“Throughout his campaign, Ashwin Madia has spoken against taking money from corporate PACs, and has said his campaign would not take any money.  However, campaign finance reports show his campaign received over $10,000 in corporate and business PAC contributions dating back to March 2008 – and he continued to say he wouldn’t take these contributions even after he had begun accepting them. Madia’s say one thing, do another approach to his own campaign finances shows he cannot be trusted.”

Washington- Ashwin Madia is on the run and can’t seem to come up with a straight answer for the voters in Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District who want to know if he would put union bosses over American workers by supporting the so-called “Employee Free Choice Act,” which would strip workers of their right to a secret ballot.

Ashwin Madia has a history of not giving straight answers to tough questions. Whether it is about his support for President Bush or his lapsed law license, Madia has failed to take a stand when it counts and is now literally running from Minnesotans looking for answers:

Watch Madia on the run here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4JlB_vio3c

By refusing to stand up for American workers, Ashwin Madia has put himself at odds with the nearly 90 percent of Americans who think “a worker’s vote should remain private.”  And Madia has even positioned himself to the left of Former South Dakota Senator and presidential candidate, George McGovern, who is warning voters that sending Democrats like Ashwin Madia to Washington, could hold grave consequences for union workers’ democratic rights:

“The legislation is called the Employee Free Choice Act, and I am sad to say it runs counter to ideals that were once at the core of the labor movement. Instead of providing a voice for the unheard, EFCA risks silencing those who would speak.”

“To my friends supporting EFCA I say this: We cannot be a party that strips working Americans of the right to a secret-ballot election.”

“I worry that there has been too little discussion about EFCA’s true ramifications, and I think much of the congressional support is based on a desire to give our friends among union leaders what they want. But part of being a good steward of democracy means telling our friends ‘no’ when they press for a course that in the long run may weaken labor and disrupt a tried and trusted method for conducting honest elections.” (Wall Street Journal, 8/8/08)

Even if Ashwin Madia won’t give the voters in Minnesota the straight answers they deserve, Madia’s campaign contributions send a clear message that he’s ready to side with union bosses over American workers:

“Not surprisingly Madia received significant support from organized labor…. Unions and their affiliated political action committees have contributed nearly $170,000 to his campaign so far – or more than 10 percent of the total raised through June.” (Minnesota Independent, 7/24/08)

“The hard-working people of Minnesota deserve a representative in Congress who will have the courage to make tough decisions and not run away from the issues like Ashwin Madia is doing,” said NRCC Spokesman Ken Spain.  “If Madia won’t stand up and face the voters now, it is obvious that they can’t count on him to stand up for their needs over special interests in Washington.”

St. Paul – Republican Party of Minnesota Chair Ron Carey today released the following statement regarding Ashwin Madia’s support of union-backed card check legislation.

“Despite previously having called himself a ‘proud supporter’ of the so-called “Employee Free Choice Act” and promising to be open and honest about it, Madia is shown repeatedly running away from questions about the legislation.  He can try to dodge questions, but the facts remain: Ashwin Madia supports a bill that even former Democratic Senator George McGovern calls ‘undemocratic’”

Click Here To Watch Madia Run From Question About Card Check

Madia Supports Card Check Legislation. “If someone can sign a card and join the Republican Party, they ought to be able to sign a card and join a union. I am a proud supporter of the Employee Free Choice Act. I support the right of workers to unionize anytime, anywhere and I would fight for that if I was in Congress. Anything I say to you right here I’ll go out there and say to them too.” (Ashwin Madia, DFL Debate, Brooklyn Park, January 12, 2008)

Former Democrat Senator George McGovern Calls Card Check Legislation “Undemocratic.” “As a longtime friend of labor unions, I must raise my voice against pending legislation I see as a disturbing and undemocratic overreach not in the interest of either management or labor.  .. Under EFCA, workers could lose the freedom to express their will in private, the right to make a decision without anyone peering over their shoulder, free from fear of reprisal.” (George McGovern, “My Party Should Respect Secret Union Ballots,” Wall Street Journal, August 8, 2008)

Washington- Ashwin Madia has apparently been so busy trying to prop up his long-shot congressional campaign for Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District that he failed to keep his license to practice law in good standing.  Now that word is out that Madia’s license has been suspended, he’s “moving quickly” to cover up his complete lack of respect and ability to comply with the law:

“Democrat Ashwin Madia’s state law license has been suspended after he failed to pay a fee.

“Campaign spokesman Abe Rakov (RAY-kov) says Madia just found out about the suspended license and is moving quickly to reinstate it. Rakov says the expiration was an oversight.

“State court records say Madia is not currently authorized to practice law.

“The records say his license expired on July 1 and his last payment was made in June 2007.” (Associated Press, 8/7/08)

“If Ashwin Madia can’t keep his own legal affairs in order how on earth are Minnesota voters supposed to trust him to write their laws?” said NRCC spokesman Ken Spain. “Ashwin Madia doesn’t seem to have any problems remembering the birthday of scandal-scarred Congressman Charlie Rangel. That’s probably because there is a financial benefit to his campaign.”

Unfortunately for Ashwin, this wasn’t the first time he’s chalked up a faux pas to forgetfulness. In a Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) interview, just two days before the DFL convention, Madia claimed that he voted for Al Gore in the 2000 election.  Just four days later, however, once Madia had received his party’s nomination, he admitted to a local newspaper that he actually voted for President George W. Bush.  (MinnPost.com: Eric Black, 4/14/08)

Madia’s mishaps extend all the way back to the time he served as the Minnesota Student Association President, resulting in impeachment proceedings against him for violating constitutional by-laws for giving away funds before he actually received budget approval. (University Wire, 10/29/97)

The voters of Minnesota deserve a capable representative who will work hard in Congress to deliver results, not someone like Madia who cannot escape a growing pattern of dereliction of duty.

Campaign spokesman Abe Rakov (RAY-kov) says Madia just found out about the suspended license and is moving quickly to reinstate it. Rakov says the expiration was an oversight.

St Paul – Republican Party of Minnesota Chair Ron Carey today released the following statement regarding Ashwin Madia’s support from the Council for a Livable World.

“Ashwin Madia’s endorsement from the Council for a Livable World is just another example of how out of touch he is.  This group doesn’t believe Iran is currently an imminent threat, it has lobbied for cuts to the defense budget, opposes arms sales to Israel, and a top advisor even advocated for negotiations with the Taliban after 9/11.  Minnesotans are looking for a candidate who will take a responsible approach to our most serious threats, not someone who cozies up to far-left organizations with extreme positions.”

A Primer On Council for a Livable World:

Council Doesn’t Think Iran Poses An “Imminent Threat.” “Council for a Livable World believes that Iran does not currently pose an imminent threat to the United States, and is unlikely to do so for years and perhaps more than a decade.”  (http://www.livableworld.org/policy/iran/, Accessed July 20, 2008)

FLASHBACK - Madia: “Iran Is Not A Threat.” “The short answer to the question is no, Iran is not a threat.

Iran: Not A Threat?

Iran Test-Fired Long-Range Rockets With “Special Capabilities.” “Citing broadcasts on state-run Iranian television, the Associated Press reported out of Tehran that the country had continued an ongoing military exercise in the Persian Gulf with another round of missile tests. The tests included the use of more long-range rockets capable of reaching Israel, as well as other devices with what state-controlled media referred to as ‘special capabilities,’ though no further details were provided.” (Glenn Kessler and Howard Schneider, “Iran Launches More Test Missiles, Draws Rebuke From Rice,” Washington Post, July 10, 2008)

Just Months Before 9/11, The President Of CLW Said U.S. Defense Budget Should Be Cut. “The United States no longer faces the Soviet Union war machine; yet this country is spending as if the world has not changed. This outrageous request to increase last year’s already bloated budget by an additional $33 billion comes at a time when the recently enacted tax cut is already draining vital resources from education, health care, prescription drug benefits, and repairs to the nation’s roads and bridges.…. In the meantime, the defense budget should be cut, not increased, until the Pentagon can cope with its problems.” (John Isaacs, Commentary: “Fewer threats, more defense dollars,” San Diego Union-Tribune, July 18, 2001)

Top Advisor To Council For A Livable World Suggested Negotiations With Taliban After 9/11. “The media say that the Taliban wants to negotiate.  Great! What we want is to influence high-level people in Afghanistan to make a decision.” (Roger Fisher, “Getting to Yes with the Taliban,” The Boston Globe, October 5, 2001)

Council Has Attacked U.S. Arms Sales To Israel:

“[T]he Pentagon Has Notified The Congress Of A Proposed Sale To Israel Of 100 Guided Bunker-Busting Bombs. What For? Israel Has Requested The Sale Of The Lockheed Martin Corp. GBU-28s Worth As Much As $30 Million.” (Fauzia Qureshi, “Israel’s Defence,” The Nation, 6/1/05)

* John Isaacs, President Of The Council For A Livable World, Said The Proposed Sale Was Clearly ‘A Provocative Step’ That Would Prompt Concerns About A Unilateral Israel Strike, Particularly In Iran And Elsewhere In The Middle East.” (Fauzia Qureshi, “Israel’s Defence,” The Nation, 6/1/05)

Council Attacked President Clinton For Offering Israel Sale Of F-22 Fighter Jet:

“President Clinton Told Israel Yesterday That He Would Recommend Allowing That Country To Buy America’s Most Advanced Fighter Plane, The F-22, Which The Air Force Touts As A Super-Weapon That Could Decide Future Battles.” (Greg Schneider, “Clinton Backs Sale Of Top Fighter To Israel,” The Washington Post, 1/20/01)

St. Paul – Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman Ron Carey today released the following statement regarding 3rd District DFL-endorsed candidate Ashwin Madia’s position on Iran.

“After the second day in a row of Iran test-firing missiles and boasting that their ‘hands are always on the trigger,’ we face a stark reminder Iran remains a serious threat to U.S. allies and U.S. interests.

Disturbingly, Ashwin Madia appears to disagree with the consensus of so many when he says ‘Iran is not a threat.’ This serious lack of judgment is just one reason he lacks the qualities necessary to serve in the U.S. Congress.”

Madia: Iran A “Concern” That Can Be Dealt With “Diplomatically.” “On Iran I have been very concerned by some bellicose language that the administration is using and some democrats are using to describe Iran. I think that they are a concern but I think we can deal with them diplomatically. When I think we use their language it puts us on a foot that we don’t want to be on.” (Ashwin Madia, DFL Debate, Brooklyn Park, January 12, 2008)

A Primer On Iran:

For Second Day In A Row, Iran Test-Fired Long-Range Rockets. “Citing broadcasts on state-run Iranian television, the Associated Press reported out of Tehran that the country had continued an ongoing military exercise in the Persian Gulf with another round of missile tests.
Iran Test-Fired A Missile That Can Reach Israel.

“In light of Al Franken’s article in a 2000 issue of Playboy, and the sketch he pitched for Saturday Night Live in 1995, voters have a right to know Congressional candidates Elwyn Tinklenberg (MN-06), Steve Sarvi (MN-02) Ashwin Madia (MN-03) and Congressman Tim Walz (MN-01) will endorse Al Franken’s Senate bid this weekend.

At a time when other Minnesota Democrats such as Congresswoman Betty McCollum are condemning his repeated questionable impression of women, the lack of condemnation from those four Minnesota Democrats speaks for itself. Tomorrow, when the Democrats convene to select a Senate nominee, I urge them all to denounce Al Franken’s comments and refuse to endorse his candidacy.”

“Walz’s Campaign Manager Chris Schmitter tracked us down soon after our arrival and emphasized Walz is not in support of any specific candidate, but supports the endorsement process.

We reconfirmed the information from our previous post and our source’s information came directly from principles in the conversation. Now as the endorsement draws nearer the different sides are trying to control all sources of information and count delegates. We are not surprised to have been approached by the Walz camp or their effort to prevent any misinterpretation of the Congressman’s position. We feel quite comfortable that our previous information is accurate it is just now as the heat is turned up every piece of information has greater impact.” Source: Checks & Balances (free subscription required) June 6, 2008

Chris Truscott, formerly of Ashwin Madia’s campaign, left a funny comment on MN Publius about Walz’s campaign deny reports that Walz is “playing an active role in Ciresi recruitment“:

Christopher Truscott was Ashwin Madia’s spokesman/press secretary during his campaign for the DFL endorsement in the 3rd CD.

###

“In the interest of full disclosure, I thought the very notion of Al Franken for U.S. Senate was absurd from the beginning and I did support the ill-fated candidacy of Mike Ciresi.

That said, I accepted that Franken was the likely DFL nominee from the moment he entered the race and hoped he would prove he has what it takes to beat Norm Coleman.

Unfortunately, however, this campaign still has all the appeal of a window seat on the Hindenburg.

To use a more contemporary analogy: Franken may have ruled on Saturday Night Live, but he is not ready for Dancing with the Stars. He is absolutely not ready for prime time.

The attacks on his writings and comedy routines were lame, foreseeable and, to a degree, manageable. But the problems with his business and tax dealings could have been discovered and dealt with before he entered the race and weren’t. It’s only May. What’s next?

You can accuse me of overreacting, fine. But I don’t recall anyone—myself included—predicting anything even resembling a headline like ‘Franken pays $70,000 back taxes, penalties.’ Are there anymore surprises coming? Does anyone really believe the Republicans fired their best shot in April?

We have less than a month before the DFL convention in Rochester. At this writing, it looks like Franken will win the endorsement handily. While avoiding a bruising floor fight is desirable, is getting Franken as the leader of the DFL ticket what we really want—what we really need?” Source: Christopher Truscott, May 13, 2008

Washington- Ashwin Madia is under fire for being dishonest with the voters of Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District in order to secure the Democrat party’s nomination. In an attempt to appeal to radical left-wing liberals, Madia declined to mention that he once supported President Bush. Madia was asked on Minnesota Public Radio just days before Minnesota’s Democrat Convention who he voted for in the 2000 presidential election, and Madia didn’t tell the truth:

MPR: 2000 election, of course, McCain wasn’t the nominee. Did you actually vote for Bush in 2000?
Madia: No.
MPR: You didn’t? You voted for Al Gore?
Madia: Yes.
(Minnesota Public Radio, 04/16/08)

Just days after clinching his party’s nomination, Madia tried to tell Minnesota Public Radio that he “misspoke” about his support for Gore. Ashwin Madia is already proving that he is big on rhetoric, but not on telling the truth. It seems that Madia deliberately tried to hide the truth in order to beat out his Democratic counterpart for the DFL nomination. Now that he has secured the nomination, the only thing the voters know for sure about Ashwin Madia is that he is willing to say anything in order to score political points.

“After campaigning against President Bush and claiming that he supported Al Gore in 2000, Ashwin Madia’s decision to come forward with the truth now that he has secured his party’s nomination is suspect to say the least,” said NRCC spokesman Ken Spain. “Clearly, he was so worried about grabbing on to the third rail of far-left liberal Democratic politics that he avoided the truth until he thought he was in the clear. This is the kind of self-serving dishonesty and doublespeak that voters have grown tired of in politicians.”

Ashwin Madia has already showed the voters of Minnesota that they cannot rely on his word. Now that Ashwin Madia has proven his willingness to pander to left-wing liberals at the expense of Minnesotans, will he forgo taking a clear position on the issues that are important to the voters he claims he wants to represent?

4:56 P.M.: MN GOP communications director Mark Drake is handing out a press release which reads “3rd CD DEMOCRATS ENDORSE FAR-LEFT MADIA”

4:54 P.M.: Bonoff has dropped out and is asking the convention to support/endorse Madia.

4:38 P.M.: The rumors are flying around that Bonoff is withdrawing.

4:37 P.M.: The eight ballot results: 65 votes or 41.5% for Bonoff, 90.5 votes or 57.8% for Madia. 93 votes are needed for endorsement. Bonoff lost three votes, Madia picked-up five votes. The ninth ballot is about to begin.

4:26 P.M.: Matt from MN Publius just wrote “Please Endorse Madia for the Party’s Sake”

4:23 P.M.: The rumors of a 6:00 P.M. deadline has just been cleared-up. We can be here all night – there is no time limit.

4:08 P.M.: The seventh ballot results: 68 votes or 44% for Bonoff, 85.5 votes or 55.3% for Madia. 93 votes are needed for endorsement. Bonoff lost four votes, Madia picked-up one vote. The eight ballot is about to begin.

3:52 P.M.: The rumors of no endorsement today has Zack at MN Publius upset. No endorsement today will be a huge setback for Democrats.

3:32 P.M.: Key Democrats at the convention are now admitting that there may be no endorsement today.

3:30 P.M.: The sixth ballot results: 72 votes or 46% for Bonoff, 84.5 votes or 54% for Madia. 93 votes are needed for endorsement. Madia picked-up one vote. The seventh ballot is about to begin.

3:20 P.M.: While I was on the radio, Bonoff and Madia both addressed the convention. From what I heard, Bonoff have the better speech. We’ll see if she picks up any votes.

2:55 P.M.: The fifth ballot results: 72 votes or 46.3% for Bonoff, 83.5 votes or 53.7% for Madia. 93 votes are needed for endorsement. Bonoff loss one vote, Madia picked-up one vote. The sixth ballot is about to begin.

2:50 P.M.: King will be doing the radio show by himself for at least the first hour. I’m not leaving this convention, but I’ll be calling in at 3:05 P.M.

2:31 P.M.: The fourth ballot results: 73 votes or 46.9% for Bonoff, 82.5 votes or 53.1% for Madia. 93 votes are needed for endorsement. Bonoff picked-up one vote, Madia lost one vote. The fifth ballot is about to begin.

2:15 P.M.: I’m still waiting for the results from the 4th ballot. The campaigns are still fired up and ready for a long day.

2:07 The third ballot results: 72 votes or 46% for Bonoff, 84.5 votes or 54% for Madia. 93 votes are needed for endorsement. Madia picked up two votes. The fourth ballot is about to begin.

1:42 P.M.: The second ballot results: 74 votes or 47.3% for Bonoff, 82.5 votes or 52.7% for Madia. 93 votes are needed for endorsement. The third ballot is about to begin.

1:35 P.M.: MN GOP Communications director Mark Drake is here to provide comment to the media after the DFL endorses a candidate. In the picture below, Drake is talking with a dedicated reader of Minnesota Democrats Exposed, Two Putt Tommy

1:29 P.M.: Some of the people/bloggers that I have spoke to about the 1st ballot results are surprised that the margin between Bonoff and Madia was so close. While most people didn’t think Madia would win on the 1st ballot, I think they were generally surprised that he didn’t have more votes.

1:20 P.M. First ballot results: 70 votes or 45.3% for Bonoff, 82.5 votes or 53.4% for Madia. 93 votes are needed for endorsement. The second ballot is about to begin.

1:04 P.M.: The first ballot is being counted.

12:58 P.M.: The rules for balloting contain in an interesting twist: ballots must be signed. This is different than Republican conventions.

12:50 P.M.: I just spoke with Elizabeth Levang to get her reaction to Bonoff’s speech. Levang was angered by Bonoff’s speech as she thinks Bonoff is perpetuating the lie that she can work across party lines. Levang thinks Bonoff has duped the people wearing the red-shirts for Bonoff. Maclean added that she and Elizabeth counted on Bonoff to keep her promises and work on an issue that effects families across Minnesota. She failed.

12:47 P.M.: The balloting is about to start. This is when the fun begins.

12:44 P.M.: Wow, I just had a great lunch from Subway. For $6 you get a sandwich, bag of chips, cookie and soda. The DFL sure knows how to run a convention, as I didn’t need to leave the building.

12:25 P.M.: The candidates are now doing a Q & A. It’s tough to hear the answers, so I’ll pass on transcribing.

12:06 P.M.: Bonoff’s presentation has just started. Her son is introducing Bonoff. In an interesting developing, Sandy Maclean and Elizabeth Lavang are at the convention. I’ve been asked by a few delegates about my posts regarding Bonoff’s mismanagement of the Grieving Parents Act in the Minnesota Senate.

11:53 A.M.: Madia’s campaign is going first…he has a total of ten minutes.

11:50 A.M.: The campaign presentations are about to begin…I don’t know who is speaking first, but the Bonoff people are getting ready.

11:40 A.M.: Representative Ron Erhadt just arrived at the convention. He received a warm response as the chair recognized him.

11:37 A.M.: The UpTake and MN Publius are also live-blogging today’s convention.

11:36 A.M.: A picture of a divided crowd at today’s convention.

11:13 A.M.: Al Franken is about to speak…actually, Mrs. Molin is on stage with Franken. No mention of his workers’ compensation insurance problems that are mentioned in today’s newspapers

11:03 A.M.: Former U.S. Senator Mark Dayton is now speaking on behalf of Senator Hillary Clinton, but mentioned Obama. Dayton is claiming that McCain wants another “100 years” of war in Iraq. I’ll have a response post about Dayton’s speech later this week.

11:00 A.M.: During a restroom break, I missed Jack Nelson-Pallymeyer’s speech.

10:25 A.M.: Chairman Melendez just delivered a great message that I will remember for Republican conventions. Here’s a summary: If you are a Bonoff supporter, and Bonoff get is endorsed, the last thing you want to do today is tick off a Madia supporter because you will need their help . Chairman Melendez than switched the roles and said that Madia supporters shouldn’t tick off Bonoff supporters. It was a good message.

10:24 A.M.: This is picture from a Madia rally held before the convention.

10:22 A.M.: DFL Party chairman Brian Melendez is speaking…he asked the candidates to “play nice” at today’s convention.

10:14 A.M.: The Madia supporters are shouting because Ashwin just walked in to the convention hall. They are chanting “WIN ASHWIN!”

10:11 A.M.: My wireless connection isn’t very strong, so I don’t think I will post many videos while I am at the convention.

9:45 A.M.: Non-partisan Secretary of State Mark Ritchie is here – not a big surprise. He’s likely signing people up on new e-mail list. Just kidding. Attorney General Lori Swanson just walked in to the auditorium. I’ll be interested to see the reaction from the crowd if she speaks. Swanson has been battling unions over efforts to unionize attorneys in Swanson office.

9:34 A.M.: During breaks in the convention business, I’ll be posting video clips. I’m loading a video clip of DFL candidate Ashwin Madia and his supporters walking through the gauntlet of Terri Bonoff supporters. The video will give you an idea of the intensity level today.

9:25 A.M.: The turnout is huge. Bonoff’s supporters are wearing red-shirts and Madia supporters are wearing blue shirts. The place is buzzing with activity. I love political conventions.

9:20 A.M.: I want to thank the 3rd CD DFL and also John Stiles and Kelly Schwinghammer at the Minnesota DFL for providing me with blog credentials for today’s convention.

According to a press release posted on MN Publius, Ashwin Madia’s campaign was endorsed today by Congressman Keith Ellison. Ellison is one of the most divisive and exteme elected officials in Minnesota. Last summer, Ellison likened President Bush to Adolf Hitler.

Since Madia doesn’t have a voting record to run on, he will be bracketed by his associations and who has endorsed his campaign. It is impossible for Madia to claim the political center when his campaign has been endorsed by an extremist like Ellison.

Ellison’s past involvement in the Nation of Islam, his record of anti-Semitic writings and his comparisons of President Bush to Adolf Hitler would prevent a true centrist from accepting his endorsement.

The race in the 3rd CD will be a real battle, but I’ll take a statesman like Congressman Ramstad campaigning with a centrist like Representative Paulsen, versus Ashwin Madia campaigning with an extremist like Congressman Ellison.

But I was contacted in the last 90 minutes by Chris Truscott, media director for Ashwin Madia’s campaign, regarding my posts today on State Senator Terri Bonoff.   Truscott asked that I clarify that I “had no contact with the Madia campaign prior to your posting the story.”

I called Chris and told him about my policy mentioned above, but I added that I would disclose that I didn’t speak with anyone directly or indirectly associated with Maida’s campaign before I published by posts on Bonoff.

“DFLers in the 3rd Congressional District this week received a flier questioning the DFL soul of Ashwin Madia, who day by day comes closer to winning the party’s endorsement to run against Republican Erik Paulsen for the seat being vacated by Jim Ramstad. In the flier, it’s noted that Madia was a supporter of John McCain for President in 2000 and Bob Dole in 1996. Madia, 30,  doesn’t deny he is a used-to-be-moderate Republican. But he says he’s become true blue, leaving the GOP for good in 2002. As a Marine officer, he voted for John Kerry in 2004 and worked on many DFL campaigns in 2006.

Said Madia spokesman Chris Truscott of the Bonoff flier: ‘Bonoff headquarters must feel like the Titanic with the band playing until the very end. Sad.’” Source: MinnPost, March 26, 2008

A dedicated reader of Minnesota Democrats Exposed, who happens to be a Democrat, sent me some comments about a new mailing from Senator Terri Bonoff. Democrats I spoke with this afternoon in the 3rd CD raised similar concerns about Bonoff's mailing.

###

Terri mailed out a full color lit piece to delegates.

Issues with the lit piece:

1) subliminal "Amy Klobuchar" on the back side of Terri talking…..top right corner

2) Terri using the DFL logo and lawn sign – it is against the rules to use until you are endorsed. Implication: she is the endorsed DFL'er.

3) SEIU – man wearing jacket prominently showing SEIU logo on back. She is not endorsed by SEIU. And she's push-polling that says people are saying bad things about her? Not. People are telling the truth about her.

Also, Terri worked at Tonka Toys during the time that Tonka Toys began all of their outsourcing of jobs. In the debate last month she said "outsourcing is good"…..I'm sure you can find the tape. The GOP had a minder there to tape it. Interesting if the reason outsourcing is good in her mind for business is because she was involved in outsourcing jobs – jobs here in Minnesota that ruined people's lives.

Over the last two weeks I have been hearing rumors that State Senator Terri Bonoff’s campaign has been telling other Democrats in the 3rd CD that one of Bonoff’s rivals, Ashwin Madia, has never had a real job.

According to a dedicated reader of Minnesota Democrats Exposed, the letter below was sent to the Star Tribune last week for publication.

The other night, I made phone calls on behalf of Third Congressional District DFL candidate Ashwin Madia.  During several conversations with prospective caucus-goers, several of them informed me of a particular line of attack against Mr. Madia by the campaign of his opponent, State Senator Terri Bonoff.  The apparent message in her campaign’s persuasion calls to caucus-goers is to the effect that “Ashwin Madia has never had a real job.”  I know Ash, as a friend, and a fellow veteran, and I am greatly offended by such an assertion.  Ashwin Madia is a Marine Corps veteran, who did his duty, and served our nation in Iraq.  If this is not a “real job” according to Senator Bonoff, then she is jeopardizing her campaign’s credibility with every member of the armed forces, every veteran, and with those who respect the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women.

Hearing this in my phone conversations with caucus-goers is not an isolated incident, either.  Other people working on the Madia campaign have heard the same thing.  A reader’s comment to a posting on the blog “MN Publius” on January 10 also recognized this line of attack coming from Senator Bonoff’s campaign.  I am not writing this as a partisan of Ashwin Madia; I do not even live in the Third Congressional District, so my work here was a favor for a good friend, a friend who I now thoroughly believe should win the DFL endorsement for Congress because of the tactlessness of his principal opponent, Senator Bonoff.  While a candidate’s life experience is a valid concern in a political campaign, I ask Senator Bonoff to come clean on this issue, and stop swift-boating Ashwin Madia because he had the courage to serve our country.

Jesse Berglund

St. Paul

###

If you’ve heard about Bonoff’s campaign claiming Madia “has never had a real job”, please leave a comment on this post.

World affairs hit home

We are all concerned about the escalating conflict in the Middle East. We in Minnesota are far from the conflict in distance, but our hearts and minds are as close as we can be.

I knock on doors to meet the people I represent. I regularly find people who have a loved one in the military in Iraq or other battle zone. I share their pride and their fear.

I knock on doors and discover a new fear: Our community has many children spending the summer in Israel and in other Middle Eastern countries. They went to learn and understand in the name of peace and find themselves seeking refuge in bomb shelters.

Recently, the Boundary Waters also has been on fire. Many families, including my own, have been watching their cabins, the source of so many family traditions, threatened with destruction, along with the forests that are Minnesota's treasure.

I ask that we, as a community, reflect on these very troubled times. Let us move beyond personal disagreements and come together in fellowship as we pray for all who are in harm's way and for our beautiful Boundary Waters. Let the goodwill of our community spread compassion and comfort among us all. Let us renew our optimistic spirit as we tackle the challenges that confront us, both at home and abroad.

I received a tip today from a reader of Minnesota Democrats Exposed that State Senator Terri Bonoff's campaign is using pictures of Bonoff with U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar in mailings. I visited Bonoff's website and found a new picture of Bonoff with Klobuchar on the front page.

An endorsement from Klobuchar would be a huge boost to any of the DFL campaigns. But my source informed me that Klobuchar "is NOT supporting anyone. She is staying neutral through the endorsement process." My source added that Klobuchar's office had been contacted today about Bonoff's campaign using Klobuchar's picture.

Now I should add that Bonoff's campaign doesn't claim that Klobuchar has endorsed Bonoff. But Bonoff's campaign is clearly hoping that people get the impression from the pictures that Klobuchar is supporting Bonoff.

Finally, there is still plenty of time for Klobuchar to endorse one of the DFL candidates in the 3rd CD before the endorsing convention. But I'm not sure that she benefits from getting involved in a DFL endorsement fight. An e-mail sent to Bonoff's campaign requesting comment about use of Klobuchar's picture was not returned.

"WASHINGTON – State Rep. Erik Paulsen of Eden Prairie, the only announced Republican in the Third Congressional District race, has shot up to the top in the money chase over his DFLer rivals.

Paulsen's fundraising total came as a relief Monday to Republican strategists, who thought he might be hurt by recent press reports suggesting that longtime Republican Rep. Jim Ramstad could be wavering in his decision to retire at the end of his current term.

Paulsen, vying to replace Ramstad, announced nearly $390,000 in fundraising receipts during the last three months of 2007, almost $90,000 more than the year-end total announced by the leading DFL fundraiser in the race, state Sen.
