During the battle for the DFL endorsement in the 3rd CD, Madia’s rival Terri Bonoff complained that Madia supporters were engaging in “whisper campaigns…”

KSTP’s Truth Test has called an attack ad from Ashwin Madia’s allies at the DCCC “false and misleading…” The ad earned a “D” rating. Ashwin Madia one wrote that his campaign was based on a “positive and uplifting message…”  Madia can’t claim this anymore.

The State Department’s Recently Released Annual Terrorism Report Says That Iran Is The World’s “Most Active” State Sponsor Of Terrorism. “Iran remained the most active state sponsor of terrorism. Elements of its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were directly involved in the planning and support of terrorist acts throughout the region and continued to support a variety of groups in their use of terrorism to advance their common regional goals. St. Paul – Republican Party of Minnesota Chair Ron Carey today released the following statement following DFL candidate Ashwin Madia’s repeated false statements regarding savings from pharmaceutical negotiations, falsely citing the Congressional Budget Office and distorting Paulsen’s own words.

“Ashwin Madia falsely contradicted Erik Paulsen when he said that the Congressional Budget Office reported there would be $30 billion in savings if Medicare Part D were to negotiate for drug prices.  Rep. Paulsen was correct: the Congressional Budget Office has said it would only have a negligible effect on drug prices. In addition, the MN DFL falsely claimed that Rep. Paulsen supports privatizing Social Security when he clearly stated ‘Social Security absolutely has to be preserved and protected, without a doubt.’

“Whether it’s lying about Rep. Paulsen’s support for Social Security privatization, lying about the CBO’s analysis of Medicare Part D, or lying to DFLers about for whom he voted in the 2000 election, Madia and his allies have shown he cannot be trusted by residents of the 3rd Congressional District.”

“When the New York Times is calling for a top Democrat to step down from his leadership post in the U.S. House, it’s clear Rangel is someone that Al Franken, Tim Walz and Ashwin Madia should think twice about embracing.  Whether it’s fellow tax dodger Al Franken and Tim Walz accepting $10,000 from Rangel’s PAC or Ashwin Madia gladly accepting tens of thousands of dollars in fundraising help, these two candidates have aligned themselves with someone with a litany of ethical lapses, legal issues, and pending investigations. To date, Madia (D-MN) has benefitted from Charlie Rangel’s ethical void, receiving $49537.61 from Rangel’s various fundraising accounts for Democratic candidates.

Today’s New York Times reported Rangel’s personal revelation that, despite having said earlier he does not owe federal back taxes, his accountants have found that he will have to pay “a modest amount” in back taxes:
“Representative Charles B. Rangel, chairman of the Congressional committee that writes the nation’s tax code, failed to pay an unspecified amount in federal taxes during the past five years on rental income from a villa he owns in the Dominican Republic, his lawyer said on Tuesday.

“Mr. Rangel, a Harlem Democrat who is chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, has owned the beachfront house at the Punta Cana resort and club since 1988, but never declared the $75,000 in rental income he has earned either on his tax returns or on his Congressional financial disclosure form.

“…his lawyer, Lanny Davis, said that the accountants had since revised their calculations and determined that Mr. Rangel would owe ‘a modest amount’ to the federal government for unpaid taxes over the last five years. Mr. Davis said Mr. Rangel was likely to owe both the state and the city a similar amount over the same period. The combined total of back taxes owed to the city, state and federal governments will probably be “several thousands of dollars,” Mr. Davis said.

“Now that Charlie Rangel has finally admitted to owing thousands of dollars after circumventing the very tax laws he has authored, it’s time for Ashwin Madia to admit that he took his ethically-tainted cash and cough it up,” said NRCC spokesman Ken Spain. “Madia stood by the embattled Harlem Congressman as he defrauded New York City taxpayers with his four apartments and now that he has hired Bill Clinton’s former lawyer and admitted guilt, he should give up the money or explain why he finds it necessary to hold on to scandal-ridden cash.”

Charlie Rangel writes the laws, and then dodges them, but Ashwin Madia doesn’t find a problem with this.  Is this an indication of what Madia would do if elected to Congress?

Rangel Failed To Report More Than $75,000 In Rental Income On Tax Returns. “Representative Charles B. Rangel has earned more than $75,000 in rental income from a villa he has owned in the Dominican Republic since 1988, but never reported it on his federal or state tax returns, according to a lawyer for the congressman and documents from the resort. In a candidate forum in January, he stated that he was “against the tax rebate plans that are being put out right now,” which put money back into the pockets of Minnesotans. In another forum, Madia stated “we’ve got the let the Bush tax cuts expire.”

According to the U.S. Treasury, if the tax cuts were to expire, middle class Americans all over the country would feel the pinch:

115 million taxpayers would see an average increase of $1,716
84 million women would see their taxes increase by approximately $1,970
48 million married couples with children would see an increase of over $2,700
12 million single parents would get an increase of over $1,000
17 million senior citizens would have their taxes increase by over $2,000
26 million small business owners would see their taxes increase by over $3,000

“‘Charlie Rangel is the designated leader on tax policy in the Democrat-led Congress, but while he is authoring massive tax hikes to exact on middle-class Americans, he is apparently dodging the IRS at all costs,’ said Ken Spain, spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee.” (New York Post, 9/6/08)

Not only have Rangel’s questionable activities sparked a House Ethics Committee inquiry, but now the National Legal and Policy Center has filed a complaint with the Justice Department to investigate Rangel’s dealings.

But amidst his growing list of questionable activities, Rangel took the time this summer to raise truck loads of campaign cash for some of his favorite Democrat recruits under the guise of a birthday bash:

Now these same Democrat candidates are spewing rhetoric about wanting to “change Washington,” while they’re already partying with a scandal-scarred Congressman who also happens to be Washington’s most notorious tax-hiker.

By keeping Rangel’s cash, Ashwin Madia is admitting he’ll do anything it takes to win — even if it means associating with an entrenched, ethically-challenged New York politician who’s part of the reason Congress has a nine percent approval rating.  If sent to DC, Ashwin Madia will only serve as an enabler of business as usual in Washington. That’s not change.

Whether it’s running away from the fact the he broke his pledge not to accept corporate PAC contributions or his record of supporting massive tax increases, Madia should do the hard-working families of the 3rd Congressional District a favor and just keep on running right out of the district.”

Madia Opposes 2001-2003 Tax Cuts. “The candidates agree – or come close – on some issues. For example, both oppose continuing President Bush’s tax cuts, and both support the Roe v. “Despite a very simple question from the moderator about whether candidates supported the extension of the 2001-2003 tax cuts, Ashwin Madia had to take two bites at the apple before partially admitting that he wouldn’t support the full extension of the tax cuts. In tough economic times, the last thing working families and small business owners need is a tax increase, and the 2001-2003 tax cuts are vital to a strong economy.  Madia’s liberal roots were revealed in his failure to support the full extension of the tax cuts.”

St. Paul – Republican Party of Minnesota Chair Ron Carey today released the following statement regarding Ashwin Madia’s acceptance of corporate PAC donation

“Throughout his campaign, Ashwin Madia has spoken against taking money from corporate PACs, and has said his campaign would not take any money.  However, campaign finance reports show his campaign received over $10,000 in corporate and business PAC contributions dating back to March 2008 – and he continued to say he wouldn’t take these contributions even after he had begun accepting them. Madia’s say one thing, do another approach to his own campaign finances shows he cannot be trusted.”

Ashwin Madia has a history of not giving straight answers to tough questions. Whether it is about his support for President Bush or his lapsed law license, Madia has failed to take a stand when it counts and is now literally running from Minnesotans looking for answers:

By refusing to stand up for American workers, Ashwin Madia has put himself at odds with the nearly 90 percent of Americans who think “a worker’s vote should remain private.”  And Madia has even positioned himself to the left of Former South Dakota Senator and presidential candidate, George McGovern, who is warning voters that sending Democrats like Ashwin Madia to Washington, could hold grave consequences for union workers’ democratic rights:

“The legislation is called the Employee Free Choice Act, and I am sad to say it runs counter to ideals that were once at the core of the labor movement. Instead of providing a voice for the unheard, EFCA risks silencing those who would speak.”

“To my friends supporting EFCA I say this: We cannot be a party that strips working Americans of the right to a secret-ballot election.”

“I worry that there has been too little discussion about EFCA’s true ramifications, and I think much of the congressional support is based on a desire to give our friends among union leaders what they want. But part of being a good steward of democracy means telling our friends ‘no’ when they press for a course that in the long run may weaken labor and disrupt a tried and trusted method for conducting honest elections.” (Wall Street Journal, 8/8/08)

Even if Ashwin Madia won’t give the voters in Minnesota the straight answers they deserve, Madia’s campaign contributions send a clear message that he’s ready to side with union bosses over American workers:

“Not surprisingly Madia received significant support from organized labor…. Unions and their affiliated political action committees have contributed nearly $170,000 to his campaign so far – or more than 10 percent of the total raised through June.” (Minnesota Independent, 7/24/08)

“The hard-working people of Minnesota deserve a representative in Congress who will have the courage to make tough decisions and not run away from the issues like Ashwin Madia is doing,” said NRCC Spokesman Ken Spain.  “If Madia won’t stand up and face the voters now, it is obvious that they can’t count on him to stand up for their needs over special interests in Washington.”

“Democrat Ashwin Madia’s state law license has been suspended after he failed to pay a fee.

“Campaign spokesman Abe Rakov (RAY-kov) says Madia just found out about the suspended license and is moving quickly to reinstate it. Rakov says the expiration was an oversight.

“State court records say Madia is not currently authorized to practice law.

“The records say his license expired on July 1 and his last payment was made in June 2007.” (Associated Press, 8/7/08)

“If Ashwin Madia can’t keep his own legal affairs in order how on earth are Minnesota voters supposed to trust him to write their laws?” said NRCC spokesman Ken Spain. “Ashwin Madia doesn’t seem to have any problems remembering the birthday of scandal-scarred Congressman Charlie Rangel. That’s probably because there is a financial benefit to his campaign.”

Unfortunately for Ashwin, this wasn’t the first time he’s chalked up a faux pas to forgetfulness. In a Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) interview, just two days before the DFL convention, Madia claimed that he voted for Al Gore in the 2000 election.  Just four days later, however, once Madia had received his party’s nomination, he admitted to a local newspaper that he actually voted for President George W. Madia’s mishaps extend all the way back to the time he served as the Minnesota Student Association President, resulting in impeachment proceedings against him for violating constitutional by-laws for giving away funds before he actually received budget approval. (University Wire, 10/29/97)

The voters of Minnesota deserve a capable representative who will work hard in Congress to deliver results, not someone like Madia who cannot escape a growing pattern of dereliction of duty.

“In light of Al Franken’s article in a 2000 issue of Playboy, and the sketch he pitched for Saturday Night Live in 1995, voters have a right to know Congressional candidates Elwyn Tinklenberg (MN-06), Steve Sarvi (MN-02) Ashwin Madia (MN-03) and Congressman Tim Walz (MN-01) will endorse Al Franken’s Senate bid this weekend.

At a time when other Minnesota Democrats such as Congresswoman Betty McCollum are condemning his repeated questionable impression of women, the lack of condemnation from those four Minnesota Democrats speaks for itself. “In the interest of full disclosure, I thought the very notion of Al Franken for U.S. Senate was absurd from the beginning and I did support the ill-fated candidacy of Mike Ciresi.

That said, I accepted that Franken was the likely DFL nominee from the moment he entered the race and hoped he would prove he has what it takes to beat Norm Coleman.

Unfortunately, however, this campaign still has all the appeal of a window seat on the Hindenburg.

To use a more contemporary analogy: Franken may have ruled on Saturday Night Live, but he is not ready for Dancing with the Stars. He is absolutely not ready for prime time.

The attacks on his writings and comedy routines were lame, foreseeable and, to a degree, manageable. But the problems with his business and tax dealings could have been discovered and dealt with before he entered the race and weren’t. It’s only May. What’s next?

You can accuse me of overreacting, fine. But I don’t recall anyone—myself included—predicting anything even resembling a headline like ‘Franken pays $70,000 back taxes, penalties.’ Are there anymore surprises coming? Does anyone really believe the Republicans fired their best shot in April?

We have less than a month before the DFL convention in Rochester. At this writing, it looks like Franken will win the endorsement handily. Just days after clinching his party’s nomination, Madia tried to tell Minnesota Public Radio that he “misspoke” about his support for Gore. Ashwin Madia is already proving that he is big on rhetoric, but not on telling the truth. It seems that Madia deliberately tried to hide the truth in order to beat out his Democratic counterpart for the DFL nomination. Now that he has secured the nomination, the only thing the voters know for sure about Ashwin Madia is that he is willing to say anything in order to score political points.

“After campaigning against President Bush and claiming that he supported Al Gore in 2000, Ashwin Madia’s decision to come forward with the truth now that he has secured his party’s nomination is suspect to say the least,” said NRCC spokesman Ken Spain. “Clearly, he was so worried about grabbing on to the third rail of far-left liberal Democratic politics that he avoided the truth until he thought he was in the clear. This is the kind of self-serving dishonesty and doublespeak that voters have grown tired of in politicians.”

Ashwin Madia has already showed the voters of Minnesota that they cannot rely on his word. Now that Ashwin Madia has proven his willingness to pander to left-wing liberals at the expense of Minnesotans, will he forgo taking a clear position on the issues that are important to the voters he claims he wants to represent?

4:37 P.M.: The eight ballot results: 65 votes or 41.5% for Bonoff, 90.5 votes or 57.8% for Madia. 93 votes are needed for endorsement. Bonoff lost three votes, Madia picked-up five votes. The ninth ballot is about to begin.

1:29 P.M.: Some of the people/bloggers that I have spoke to about the 1st ballot results are surprised that the margin between Bonoff and Madia was so close. While most people didn’t think Madia would win on the 1st ballot, I think they were generally surprised that he didn’t have more votes.

1:20 P.M. First ballot results: 70 votes or 45.3% for Bonoff, 82.5 votes or 53.4% for Madia. 93 votes are needed for endorsement. The second ballot is about to begin.

1:04 P.M.: The first ballot is being counted.

12:58 P.M.: The rules for balloting contain in an interesting twist: ballots must be signed. This is different than Republican conventions.

12:50 P.M.: I just spoke with Elizabeth Levang to get her reaction to Bonoff’s speech. Levang was angered by Bonoff’s speech as she thinks Bonoff is perpetuating the lie that she can work across party lines. Levang thinks Bonoff has duped the people wearing the red-shirts for Bonoff. Maclean added that she and Elizabeth counted on Bonoff to keep her promises and work on an issue that effects families across Minnesota. She failed.

12:47 P.M.: The balloting is about to start. This is when the fun begins.

12:44 P.M.: Wow, I just had a great lunch from Subway. For $6 you get a sandwich, bag of chips, cookie and soda. The DFL sure knows how to run a convention, as I didn’t need to leave the building.

12:25 P.M.: The candidates are now doing a Q & A. It’s tough to hear the answers, so I’ll pass on transcribing.

12:06 P.M.: Bonoff’s presentation has just started. Her son is introducing Bonoff. In an interesting developing, Sandy Maclean and Elizabeth Lavang are at the convention. I’ve been asked by a few delegates about my posts regarding Bonoff’s mismanagement of the Grieving Parents Act in the Minnesota Senate.

11:53 A.M.: Madia’s campaign is going first…he has a total of ten minutes.

11:50 A.M.: The campaign presentations are about to begin…I don’t know who is speaking first, but the Bonoff people are getting ready.

11:40 A.M.: Representative Ron Erhadt just arrived at the convention. He received a warm response as the chair recognized him.

11:37 A.M.: The UpTake and MN Publius are also live-blogging today’s convention.

11:13 A.M.: Al Franken is about to speak…actually, Mrs. Molin is on stage with Franken. No mention of his workers’ compensation insurance problems that are mentioned in today’s newspapers

11:03 A.M.: Former U.S. Senator Mark Dayton is now speaking on behalf of Senator Hillary Clinton, but mentioned Obama. Dayton is claiming that McCain wants another “100 years” of war in Iraq. I’ll have a response post about Dayton’s speech later this week.

11:00 A.M.: During a restroom break, I missed Jack Nelson-Pallymeyer’s speech.

10:25 A.M.: Chairman Melendez just delivered a great message that I will remember for Republican conventions. Here’s a summary: If you are a Bonoff supporter, and Bonoff get is endorsed, the last thing you want to do today is tick off a Madia supporter because you will need their help . Chairman Melendez than switched the roles and said that Madia supporters shouldn’t tick off Bonoff supporters. It was a good message.

10:22 A.M.: DFL Party chairman Brian Melendez is speaking…he asked the candidates to “play nice” at today’s convention.

10:14 A.M.: The Madia supporters are shouting because Ashwin just walked in to the convention hall. They are chanting “WIN ASHWIN!”

10:11 A.M.: My wireless connection isn’t very strong, so I don’t think I will post many videos while I am at the convention.

9:45 A.M.: Non-partisan Secretary of State Mark Ritchie is here – not a big surprise. He’s likely signing people up on new e-mail list. Just kidding. Attorney General Lori Swanson just walked in to the auditorium. I’ll be interested to see the reaction from the crowd if she speaks. Swanson has been battling unions over efforts to unionize attorneys in Swanson office.

9:34 A.M.: During breaks in the convention business, I’ll be posting video clips. I’m loading a video clip of DFL candidate Ashwin Madia and his supporters walking through the gauntlet of Terri Bonoff supporters. The video will give you an idea of the intensity level today.

9:25 A.M.: The turnout is huge. Bonoff’s supporters are wearing red-shirts and Madia supporters are wearing blue shirts. The place is buzzing with activity. I love political conventions.

9:20 A.M.: I want to thank the 3rd CD DFL and also John Stiles and Kelly Schwinghammer at the Minnesota DFL for providing me with blog credentials for today’s convention.

Since Madia doesn’t have a voting record to run on, he will be bracketed by his associations and who has endorsed his campaign. It is impossible for Madia to claim the political center when his campaign has been endorsed by an extremist like Ellison.

Ellison’s past involvement in the Nation of Islam, his record of anti-Semitic writings and his comparisons of President Bush to Adolf Hitler would prevent a true centrist from accepting his endorsement.

The race in the 3rd CD will be a real battle, but I’ll take a statesman like Congressman Ramstad campaigning with a centrist like Representative Paulsen, versus Ashwin Madia campaigning with an extremist like Congressman Ellison.

I’m on the radio today from 3-5 p.m. with King Banaian from SCSU Scholars, but the show airing today was broadcast last Saturday. Governor Tim Pawlenty was a guest of the show from 3:20 to 4:15 p.m. Zack Stephenson from MN Publius was guest from 4:45 to 5:00 p.m to talk about the results from the 3rd CD battle between Ashwin Madia and State Senator Terri Bonoff.

I’ll be on the radio today for a two-hour program from 3-5 p.m. with King Banaian of SCSU Scholars on AM 1280 The Patriot. Governor Tim Pawlenty will be an in-studio guest starting at 3:30 p.m.

Before you listen to King and me, make sure you listen to the first four hours of the Northern Alliance Radio Network. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. you can hear Power Line’s John Hinderaker and Chad and Brian from Fraters Libertas. Mitch Berg and Captain Ed are on the air from 1-3 pm.

UPDATE: Zack Stephenson from MN Publius was a guest of the show at 4:45 p.m. to talk about the results from the 3rd CD battle between Ashwin Madia and State Senator Terri Bonoff. It’s clear from the reporting on MN Publius that Madia had one heck of a day.

Terri mailed out a full color lit piece to delegates. 

Issues with the lit piece: 

1)  subliminal "Amy Klobuchar" on the back side of Terri talking…..top right corner 

2)  Terri using the DFL logo and lawn sign – it is against the rules to use until you are endorsed.  Implication:  she is the endorsed DFL'er. 

3)  SEIU – man wearing jacket prominently showing SEIU logo on back.  She is not endorsed by SEIU. And she's push-polling that says people are saying bad things about her?  Not. People are telling the truth about her.
 
Also, Terri worked at Tonka Toys during the time that Tonka Toys began all of their outsourcing of jobs.  In the debate last month she said "outsourcing is good"…..I'm sure you can find the tape.  The GOP had a minder there to tape it. Interesting if the reason outsourcing is good in her mind for business is because she was involved in outsourcing jobs – jobs here in Minnesota that ruined people's lives.

According to a dedicated reader of Minnesota Democrats Exposed, the letter below was sent to the Star Tribune last week for publication.

The other night, I made phone calls on behalf of Third Congressional District DFL candidate Ashwin Madia.  During several conversations with prospective caucus-goers, several of them informed me of a particular line of attack against Mr. Madia by the campaign of his opponent, State Senator Terri Bonoff.  The apparent message in her campaign’s persuasion calls to caucus-goers is to the effect that “Ashwin Madia has never had a real job.”  I know Ash, as a friend, and a fellow veteran, and I am greatly offended by such an assertion.  Ashwin Madia is a Marine Corps veteran, who did his duty, and served our nation in Iraq.  If this is not a “real job” according to Senator Bonoff, then she is jeopardizing her campaign’s credibility with every member of the armed forces, every veteran, and with those who respect the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women.

Hearing this in my phone conversations with caucus-goers is not an isolated incident, either.  Other people working on the Madia campaign have heard the same thing.  A reader’s comment to a posting on the blog “MN Publius” on January 10 also recognized this line of attack coming from Senator Bonoff’s campaign.  I am not writing this as a partisan of Ashwin Madia; I do not even live in the Third Congressional District, so my work here was a favor for a good friend, a friend who I now thoroughly believe should win the DFL endorsement for Congress because of the tactlessness of his principal opponent, Senator Bonoff.  While a candidate’s life experience is a valid concern in a political campaign, I ask Senator Bonoff to come clean on this issue, and stop swift-boating Ashwin Madia because he had the courage to serve our country.

A rally is planned at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 27 at Scenic Heights Elementary, 5650 Scenic Heights Drive, Minnetonka.

Paulsen is seeking to replace his former boss, Rep. Jim Ramstad, R-Minnetonka, who announced last fall he would not seek another term in Congress.

Paulsen announced he was interested in the seat in October. The district includes much of suburban Hennepin County and a small portion of southern Anoka County.

World affairs hit home

We are all concerned about the escalating conflict in the Middle East. We in Minnesota are far from the conflict in distance, but our hearts and minds are as close as we can be.

I knock on doors to meet the people I represent. I regularly find people who have a loved one in the military in Iraq or other battle zone. I share their pride and their fear.

I knock on doors and discover a new fear: Our community has many children spending the summer in Israel and in other Middle Eastern countries. They went to learn and understand in the name of peace and find themselves seeking refuge in bomb shelters.

Recently, the Boundary Waters also has been on fire. Many families, including my own, have been watching their cabins, the source of so many family traditions, threatened with destruction, along with the forests that are Minnesota's treasure.

I ask that we, as a community, reflect on these very troubled times. Let us move beyond personal disagreements and come together in fellowship as we pray for all who are in harm's way and for our beautiful Boundary Waters. Let the goodwill of our community spread compassion and comfort among us all. Let us renew our optimistic spirit as we tackle the challenges that confront us, both at home and abroad.

Bonoff's clueless.  Comparing the fire danger to her cabin to the fear a loved one has for someone serving in Iraq is crazy.

An endorsement from Klobuchar would be a huge boost to any of the DFL campaigns. But my source informed me that Klobuchar "is NOT supporting anyone.  She is staying neutral through the endorsement process." My source added that Klobuchar's office had been contacted today about Bonoff's campaign using Klobuchar's picture.  

Now I should add that Bonoff's campaign doesn't claim that Klobuchar has endorsed Bonoff.  But Bonoff's campaign is clearly hoping that people get the impression from the pictures that Klobuchar is supporting Bonoff. 

Finally, there is still plenty of time for Klobuchar to endorse one of the DFL candidates in the 3rd CD before the endorsing convention.  But I'm not sure that she benefits from getting involved in a DFL endorsement fight. An e-mail sent to Bonoff's campaign requesting comment about use of Klobuchar's picture was not returned.

Paulsen's fundraising total came as a relief Monday to Republican strategists, who thought he might be hurt by recent press reports suggesting that longtime Republican Rep. Jim Ramstad could be wavering in his decision to retire at the end of his current term.

Last Friday, I wrote that rumors were flying that Representative Erik Paulsen's Congressional campaign had raised close to $390,000 in the fourth quarter. Paulsen's campaign released their fundraising numbers and my post was spot on.

As I wrote last Friday, Paulsen's fundraising numbers are simply off the charts and they should send the message that Paulsen will not be outworked by any of the DFL candidates in the race to replace Congressman Jim Ramstad.
